This application requires Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0

So after ages of Sonic 4 trying to tell me it needs Java, I finally get around to uninstalling and reinstalling Java. When I try to boot up the game, it gives me the message "This application requires Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0".
Why. Why can't it just use Java 8? What makes Java 1.6.0 so special?

EDIT: Boot up the game from the EXE in the steam folder.

With that written on java.com, why doesn't anyone from Steam or Sega just update the game's launcher so it can run on Java 8. The game actually runs on its own outside of Steam's overlay (without the launcher). Its just that in order to record your achievements, you have to run the launching exe via Steam. This has been going on for over a year now, endless posts about it, and still nothing?

Just Install an older Java Version.It isn't recommended but helps out for Sonic the hedgehog 4 1&2.

This works, now the game can run in the Steam Overlay after installing it. Thanks for that link! But the problem is that Sega or Steam should include the necessary files upon installing the game.

When you have to go online and search and dig for the legacy files, its an incovenience to players, especially since Java likes to only install the latest version automatically.
