Anything to do with pop culture has toxic behaviour on the steam forums.. Mass appeal games always have a hoard of crazies lol
Sonic Mania.
The reality:
Genesis era fans:
Their favorite games are the original 1,2,3 + knuckles games. Those are all games that increased in quality with each main release and it was a good time. in the 00's they got the Rush and Advance games which were fine. Modern sonic era has given them Sonic 4 episode 1 and 2, which were awful, Generations, which was mediocre but a step in the right direction, Forces, which was awful for 2D sonic. And Mania, which is pretty much an approved fan game, and doesn't count because it's not made by Sonic Team. This is their newest games and it equates best to a "slightly improved Sonic 4". Basically - they
truly haven't eaten good since the 90s, not counting fan games. Come along Sonic Superstars, a game meant to appeal to the 2D sonic fans. It features mediocre to bad levels, inconsistent music, terrible boss fights, etc. In many ways it is worse than the OG games released 20 years ago. Why doesn't Sonic Team make a game better than a game they've already made? Are they stupid?
Adventure Era Fans:
Their favorite games probably SA1 or SA2. Once again, that series of games improved with a sequel, which is somehow unattainable nowadays. The sonic adventure games have never had a true successor, with Heros being acceptable but mediocre, Shadow being poor, and 06 being a disaster. After 06, Sonic Team invented an incredible mechanic called "boost" which is where you press the A button to go fast. Instead of gaining momentum with skillful gameplay and level knowledge, you can just skip entire sections of a level by boosting. This started with Unleashed which must either be lauded as a good sonic game, or damned as a horrible sonic game, depending on astrological conditions. After Unleashed, Sonic Team proceed to alternate between making mediocre boost games or bad boost games. Those of ill mental health (average sonic fan) and children claim that Frontiers is somehow like an adventure game, despite having boost which invalidates adventure style level design. Basically, Sonic Team made their best 3D games in y2k era and then abandoned the entire formula.
Modern Sonic Fans:
If you like modern sonic there's no hope for you. Your opinions are invalid and wrong because you are either a child or sick in the head. The best game in your repertoire is Unleashed and you're unsure if you even like it or not.
The running theme is that around the early 2000s, Sonic Team lost the ability to learn from their mistakes, every release since then is a crapshoot of whether they accidentally do something right or not, and even if they do, they can never live up to what they've made beforehand. Sonic fans are never happy because the newer games don't live up to older games.
1. Make a decent game. (i.e. not Forces)
2. Don't put anti-consumer crap like Denuvo on it.
3. Don't try to sneak in the installer for a service not all players will want, without giving them a chance to click a "No" button.
4. Don't lie to them that they need to create an account on a launcher other than the one they bought the game on, let alone one that is unpopular.
This... really isn't rocket science. Fans of most other series might not complain about this stuff all the time but that's because those series don't do this stuff.
It's not Sonic fans that are irrational. It's the Sonic games that are doing this to their fans.
