In Sonic 3 & Knuckles when you create 1 save file for Sonic, you can't use other characters. You need to create another save file for Sonic & Tails, so starting a new file from new. If someone wants to play as Tails, then another save file.
So many secrets, you discover, during another run.

How often do I replay 30-100 hour games? Never.

Guess you were not around in the early 90:s.
New releases on Genesis and SNES, usually cost between $59-$69, and sometimes more.
$60, back in 1992, is $131 today. This includes the Sonic games.

Even if we accept that argument, its still going up against Mario Wonder. Metroid Dread was lambasted for being a short 2D game, but positive word-of-mouth from starving franchise veterans was able to overcome it (the last all-new Metroid game, Other M, was released in 2008 and generally panned). Meanwhile, Sonic hasn't been lacking in quantity of games; just quality.
