In terms of level design, it's kinda sorta like Sonic CD (not a good thing) and less like Sonic 3&K or Sonic Mania. Some zones are better than others, like Press Factory which rocks.
The bosses suck unless you love bosses that are unattackable for long periods of time as you deal with easy to dodge attacks, though some are cool (again, Press Factory).
Overall it is aggressively mid and best purchased only if discounted.
First half of this game is fun, as good as the classics. The second half goes downhill a lot, feeling more like a polished Sonic 4.
Yeah I'd place it below Sonic 3 and Mania, and above Sonic 1 and CD in my opinion.
In terms of gimmicks it's not too bad, aside from cyber station.. you know that squid power up thing you see in the trailers? Well it controls horribly and I hated it, there's a similar thing that turns sonic into a mouse and it was a negative part of the game
The bosses, especially the last one kinda drag the game down
Music as well, while alot of it is good some of them are really repetitive and generic, this game is like 80-90% good
Could of been so much better with a few tweaks and changes, and with the current asking price I'd only recommend on a sale unless you're impatient like me
