Alternate Robots?

So I unlocked Metal Amy parts and built her. I'm now past SPOILER'S game mode, and want to make more robots, but it looks like I have to remove all of my parts and paint to change robots? So if I want to swap, I'd have to get 100+ medals to do so every time since they're all one time use?

Am I confused? Would that mean to have more than one robot I'd have to start an entirely new save file every time? If so...that's kind of stupid so I hope I'm wrong.

In the shop you can buy a prototype to add more battle bots to your collection.

Oh! I was wondering what that meant, I thought it was a preset of all the parts and gray paint instead of having to pay to make your default model again. That's a relief, thanks!
