How do I, ah, "get my gun back"?
So I bought the tactical soldier pack (because I'm a shmuck for new outfits), and I noticed a sweet gun in my apartment. Rad!

Then I picked it up, dropped it in the apartment, left, came back later, and it is apparently gone forever just because I touched it.

Really?

How the hell do I get it back?

Whenever you change into that outfit, it spawns in your hands. Somtimes it can be found in the apartments on its own as well, but it seems to be a random occurence.

Are there any palces to buy a gun or is it just hand to hand combat mainly?

You are an under cover cop. This is not GTA.

Because undercover cops can't carry weapons, right?

Wrong, undercover cops don't run around with police/military guns.

Guns are used in very specific quests and there are always guns there for them. If you use guns outside of those few places, the cops come to break up the fight. Now, of course, you can kill the cops, too, but since you're a cop yourself, I'd think most people would try to avoid killing their co workers. And yes, this game is mainly hand to hand combat. And it's a great deal of fun.

Thanks for the helpful post.

Guns are limited, but IMO, that's what makes the game so great. Rather than GTA-rampage shooting, where I so happen to carry 8 different weapons on me, conflicts in SD are handled through street fights... your fists, kicking, slamming enemies into telephone booths or dumpsters. This is MUCH more realistic to me, and makes the game very enjoyable. Also, as you progress in the game, you will be able to walk up to the trunk of various cars and obtain weapons. (firearms from police car trunks, knives/tire irons from civilian cars).

Hong Kong doesn't share the same gun culture as America, so no, guns wouldn't be as common-place as you would think.

I have the same DLC. Just sleep in your bed and when you wake up the gun should be exactly where you found it the first time!
