How do you put up/holster a weapon?

I'm running around with a pistol that I can't put down and no one can talk to me. When I approach someone they freak out and cower and wont open dialogue option.

tap down key or hold down key. I can't remember which one it was. The other one makes you hide the weapon and the other one throws it away. Only pistols can be hidden. Machine guns and such can only be thown away

Kinda annoying how jumbled and overloaded the key bindings are. Arrow keys. "F" to avoid a stomp, "F" to strangle somebody, RMB at this time does that, RMB at another time does something completely different. R to pick something up, R to reload. The distinction between 'hold' and 'tap'. If you tap for too long you're screwed, if you hold not long enough ditto. No good feedback about how long to hold or when to tap for the various special cases.
