Sleeping Dogs crashing/freezing help please.

Managed to get Sleeping Dogs when it was marked down to 91% and at first I thought the crashes and freezes were some kind of restriction introduced by Steam for those that got the game cheap, but I have a few friends who got it at 91% and have no problems.

The problem has been on a few threads but in different forms, my issue is a freeze and "HKSHIP has stopped working" crash that happens anytime from 5 seconds to 5 minutes after booting game.

Solutions I've tried from the forums that don't work:

*Disabled Windows colour scheme from Aero to basic
*Run in compatibility mode with administrator
*downloaded the latest AMD drivers
*disabled in game Steam community
*reinstalled, verified files

My system is W7 Ultimate 32 bit
ATI RADEON 3870HD X2
INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q6600 2.4GHZ
4 GB RAM

I have tried downloading the .dll file and still nothing :(

Also, I cannot run the d3d11 installer from the redist folder, so that's a no go too...

I have the same problem, except I can't even get on to the main menu, it just crashes straight away.

It seems to be a strange mix of issues on the forums, I don't know if it's a new problem or part of the recurring bugs of this game.

I upgraded my AMD drivers and it all seems to work fine now.

Im having exactly the same problem as you kendo. My sysyem is more than adequate for the game Had it before from a torrent site to try before buying & that version worked perrfect

I tried download those drivers, still didn't work, that was one of the solution's on the other threads.

I'm used to having issues like this, especially having an ATI card, but i've never hit this much of a brick wall trying to find a solution.

I'm tempted to believe what a lot of the threads are saying on Steam and Square Enix sites....this game just does not work on some systems :(

Extra note, while thinking the fault was due to the 91% sale, I tried the game in offline mode, lasted a teeeeny bit longer but still froze, crashed and wouldn't start again in offline as it kept trying to finish the installation process.

I'm having the same problem, but with an GTX 570 Nvidia card. It's random, there were times I played for two hours straight before it crashed, while there were a time where I hopped on a car, took a turn and it crashed.

I don't know what to do, I think the game is awesome and it made me wonder how GTA 5 would compare to that, 'cause "kung fu-ing" people to death feels much more satisfying to me then shooting them, but as it is right now, all I hope for GTA 5 is that it works! XD

Tried all the OP "solutions" and it didn't changed anything...if anyone knows a real solution, please, keep us informed.

Nice to know it's not just ATI. This is SO frustrating, there must be some solution. I want contact Steam support but I have never recieved a satisfactory response from them so I don't bother anymore.

Hi to all , i bought the german "Low Violence" Version of the game and i was wondering why i cant find the HD Texture Pack on Steam. I managed it to download it through the web browser on the steam site but i found out that my game crashes (i get to the menu but the game or even benchmark result in a crash to desktop error) because of the HD Pack. So maybe you should try to disable your HD Texture Pack in the graphic Options. Maybe this helps ;) . I also tried some other solutions that occur on the internet but none of them did work for me except for disabling die HD Textures.

Yeah, I'm not using the HD textures, in fact, I even downloaded them, but turned it off. Turned it on, and was able to play for an hour or so, which is nice, but the crashes are as random as it gets, so, that doesn't say much to me...At one time I thought it was something to do with the temperature of my GPU, but again, as I said, it happened to me that the game crashed right after I got a car and started driving.

Meh...I think I'm gonna try to do the missions as fast as possible, at least to see the story, and whenever they fix the game/I fix the problem, I get the DLCs...

Just tried another re-install and verify for the hell of it. Same problem, it happens to me after a matter of minutes, so I can't really experience the game at all. I've even been skipping story cut scenes just to get to a save checkpoint :/

I wanna assume it's because of the settings? I'm able to load the game, up until I start a NEW GAME. On the load screen is where it freezes. Would love to hear solutions, as well.

I've tried changing display and sound settings and nothing has worked so far. Mine seems to 'warm up' with the crashes. I boot and a crash takes seconds, restarting and I can get the game started before a crash, then I can play for up to ten minutes when restarting again and so on.
I've decided to message support and ask them nicely to not just tell me to ask the developers, like they have done every other time I've contacted them.

UPDATE: I have just tried a fix from another thread, which advised going to regedit and adding a command to ignore the Direct X check, this STILL did not work. Apologies. The full fix is below:

"installscript.vdf runs D3D11Install_2010.exe if Steam detects that you're running Windows Vista. If you're not running in compatibility mode and you're sure you're not running Windows Vista, this may work for you:

1. Open regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Valve\Steam\Apps\202170
2a. If you're using a 32-bit version of Windows 7, you'll find it at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\Apps\202170 instead.
3. In this key, add a new DWORD value. Set the name to DirectXCheck and the value to 1.

This should skip the DirectX check."
