Me too. For me GTA died after Vice City (great characters, story, music, graphic). GTA:SA seemed like a jump into the RPG pool (you have to "upgrade" your character to progress in the game, WTF?!). For me SD is what GTA used to be and that's why I like it. Story, story, story, plus kung fu instead guns... who wants more, eh? ;]
Cop stuff is a nice change of pace, not boring, just different. Hacking CCTV cameras and arresting innocent civilians was a ton of fun for me, only wish there was more cameras around.
Driving is just fine the way it is. Arcade-y, but still fun. Bikes are ridiculously fun. Any car is a potential ramp for stunts, not that there is any shortage of ramps. I rarely drive cars, but cars definitely have weight and bounce back/sideways when they hit something bigger than themselves :-)
Nearly everything you can find in GTA, can be found in Sleeping Dogs too. Except planes, tanks, helicopters, rocket launcher(s). Tanks aren't necessary, just find a durable vehicle and ram any vehicle(s) till they explode. Even fast cars can ram 30 - 40 vehicles before they catch fire themselves. I'm pretty sure you can't do this in any GTA to date, which is definitely another plus in favor of Sleeping Dogs. There are no garages either, but this is not a problem, purchased vehicles are available from virtually any parking garage marked on your map. Almost anything worth driving can be bought, anything else you'd like, "borrow it indefinitely" ;-)
Every district has a safehouse, although only 1 of them is available until you make serious progress. However, you can manually save at any time (unlike GTA) and/or use fast travel (grab a taxi) and head home (going to sleep saves automatically). This convinience can also be used during missions to skip some unnecessary travel time, since loading your save file teleports you back to closest safehouse.
As for cops giving you hard time for your hard work, err... felonies you commit, they get upset pretty quick the higher your face level is. Level 5 is max for cops. No army in Hong Kong :-P You can go completely ballistic at face level 1. At later levels, your survival depends strictly on you survival skills and ability to use the terrain to your advantage. Your health regenerates to 50% on foot while not taking fire. Not sure how much more freedom you'd like. That's plenty IMHO.
Money in Honk Kong is not much of an issue either. One can be a multi-millionaire before even having a chance to spend any of it (content is locked by your current face level). Even if you didn't used money rationally (does anyone?), you can replenish it pretty fast by betting on ♥♥♥♥ fights, hijacking armored vans or playing mahjong. Getting rich in GTA is quite a chore until you get ahold of Hunter (military helicopter), then you can go crazy until money cap is reached or game crashes (usually this happens first).
IDK, to each his own, but I actually prefer Sleeping Dogs over (any) GTA. And this is coming from someone who played every GTA (released on PC) to date and put 100's if not a thousand of game hours into almost all of them. As for replay value, Sleeping Dogs gives you nearly unlimited replay value out of the box. Whether it's just improving your best times/scores, competing for various challenges/stat awards with your friends on social hub or competing against the best in the world, there is always plenty to do. Even if you don't want to do missions, as soon as free roam is unlocked, you don't have to. Sleeping Dogs will still provide hundreds of hours of break neck fun. My advice - give it another go.
Having played and owned all GTA titles on PC, fact that every game that has come after has been born or based from GTA in one shape or another.
GTA5 is NOTHING like previous titles, it tries to do too much and was weaker in the story dept.
Sleeping Dogs goes in a different direction and that is good, It also is similar to GTA4 in that it builds a relationship with the gamer and the character.
Remember, this isn't about being on a desert island with ONLY one game that you can buy or own. We all can own and play every game under the sun (Just Cause)! Each has it's good and bad points.
If you call something like GTA boring then pretty much all open world games fall into that category, since other than guns/kung fu/driving etc the missions still follow the same A to B logic.
That would be stupid.
If i'm on the other side of a country in GTA4 for eg i can't be bothered driving so i phone for a cab -real life. Pop into a gun shop, buy some ammo, clothes, wepons and then do a mission. Decide to cycle atop the highest hills, jump from a plane or zeppelin, swim/submarine under the ocean for treasure.
Sleeping Dogs is a different kettle of fish but not exactly too different; buy clothes, complete mission/sub missions, japanese, goes to jail, bent cops etc, etc. Yep it fits into if you like GTA you will most probably like.......
Put it this way, i dont play SD and go this isn't like GTA, becasue it isn't... but it it fits into the genre i like
Every game uses the same mechanics. You can even say Assassin's Creed is GTA and it is true in some extent. The missions have the same theme: kill, steal, go from A to B, follow, blah, blah, blah. What differs those games is the setting, characters and other details. If you like kung fu, SD would be your choice but if you appreciate parkour or historical setting AC is for you.
Don't go around shooting guns like a lunatic because the cops will be on you faster than asians on rice
The easiest way to take out thugs is to run them over with a car, normal combat takes too long and is often tedious. Always abuse environments and melee weapons for quick fights so the game doesn't drag on forever.
The open world aspect is basically one big waste of time, if you don't feel bored out of your minds after beating the excellent main campaign and the 3-4 story DLC, then maybe the open world is worth taking a look at. I am personally so fed up with the boring side missions in this game that it's now heading towards uninstall.
I think there's kinda a lack of silly things to do, you can't rob people or pick up random objects, or things like that. But the game play is a lot better. The mini games are entertaining, the missions have a bit of variety. The longer you play, the more interesting things seem to get.
I have 150 hours playing Sleeping Dogs and not bored yet! There's tons to do!

MAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHA..... thanks man i need that, was feeling bit down lately and this just cheered me up
My problem is I boot the game up, get into for a little, and just have no compulsion to finish or play it anymore. Happened about 5 times now. I've played plenty of games where I initially had this reaction, but eventually a different mood/state of mind would really let me appreciate a game like this. Sometimes it would take years. But with Sleeping Dogs I found something like Just cause 2 more playable (we all know how empty that game is) Its a shame cause I know sleeping dogs is a well done game, but I can't get into it for the life of me.
