Sleeping Dogs won't launch: HKShip.exe has stopped working
I haven't played this game in a few years and after a recent upgrade I thought I'd play it again (it was a crazy fun game!). Instead, I've found that the game doesn't work at all. When launching the game, it brings up an empty white window for a brief second then crashes with "HKShip.exe has stopped working".

System specs:
  • Win10 build 15025
  • i7-6700k
  • 16GB RAM
  • GTX1080, driver 378.49
  • 3 x 1080 monitors @ 120hz (running on single monitor in windowed mode)

What I've tried:
  • Deleting game and reinstalling
  • Verified integrity of local files
  • Enabled/disabled HD Texture Pack DLC
  • Run HKShip.exe from game folder folder as Administrator
  • Run HKShip.exe in Win7 and XP compatibility modes
  • Setting game properties in NVIDIA control panel for single display
  • Disabled any "advanced" settings (filtering, cache, MFAA, etc) in NVIDIA program settings
  • Confirmed Intel IGPU disabled in BIOS
  • Manually ran D3D11Install_2010.exe and vcredist_x86.exe from redist folder
  • Confirmed DEP set to "essential Windows programs and services only"
  • Disabled Windows 10 XBox Game DVR
  • Disabled NVIDIA GeForce Experience Share game streaming
  • Disabled Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service

As I noted in the OP, I'm running a 1080 on driver release 378.49, which as of this writing is the latest production release from NVIDIA.

NVIDIA has just shipped driver version 378.66 and.... no change, still can't launch the game without it immediately crashing.

common issue on windows 10 is this game crashing

for me it only happens randomly every 2-5 hours

best bet is to google a solution for launch crashes

I had been Googling for solutions for a couple weeks before posting this. The list of things I've tried have each been in response to a suggestion found during that process. Thus far nothing has worked.

Next step is a full Windows reinstall, maybe it's due to the Windows Insider fast-ring build I'm currently running.

Turns out a fresh OS installation did the trick. Not exactly an ideal fix, but hey it's working.

Same problem here, does not start on a decent Win8.1 PC. Other games work fine, and unfortunately reinstalling the OS is not an option for me. Waiting for the PS4 version that I ordered just now...

i fix my problem by:
Downloading xinput1_3.dll

https://www.dllme.com/dll/files/xinput1_3_dll.html

then paste it on local c drive/ program file x86/ steam/ steamapps/ common/ sleepingdogs/

to be honest im sick of this problem and i paste the file everywhere on this sleeping dogs folders, thats include SleepingDogs folder, redist folder and DXRedist Folder.

I bought this. Spent the next 3hrs trying to get it to run every which way.

Screw this. I loved the original but this is just not worth the headache. RIP
