well i don't know what smart cast would imply in this type of game cuz the casting sistem is different from lol or dota ... in lol or dota smart cast is used to cast spell at either push of the button or realeas of the button in order to eliminate further other actions that the default controls force you to do ( as in q and click instead of just q release or just q ).
so yeah in this game i don't know how one would impliment a smart cast type sistem due to not only the way spells are created then casted but due to the fact that one can either cast normally or self cast.
but my other statement about spell canceling i think would benefit the game immensly making controlls feel a bit more responsive. because when you make a mistake like you mentioned earlier like queing up a lighting spell while the enemy casts water on you at the same time, makes that a huge handicap not being able to cancel said spell and counteract with either attacking the enemy or using fire to dry yourself out.
also the other thing i mentioned before: making a mistake in input and making a wall spell instead of whatever you had in mind by wrong button input due to let's say either a normal human mistake or lack of judgment for a split second, would also benefit greatly from a cancel spell feature.
i mentioned that at the start of the post that i do know that you can cancel elements with it's oposite. i was just suggesting a way to cancel out a full spell with the touch of a button.
i consider it as making the game feel less clunky in that regard ... i don't know if it is really intentional ... i mean the friendly fire i know is intentional and i get the reason why .. but the inability to cancel a full spell with one button seems a little bit odd
not complaining though it is just a suggestion
Smart cast is aiming with the mouse without using the circle thing/clicking like if you want throw inmolation/combustion focus thing you need to click where is going to travel meanwhile with smart cast just press the buttong and its going to land where is you mouse.
my fingers becomes spaghetti trying to memory everything.
again it is an intentional mechanic not an oversight. it is a part of magicka and of countering. if i see you start queuing lightning i get you wet and you are boned, which also prevents spamming of certain things. again it is a very important part of countering.
for instance not only because of lightning but sprays and beams as well.if you input a spray and you see me charging a rock you will get hit by the rock because you made a wrong tactical decision not putting up a wall or earth armor first since the animation to fire a spray and put an earth armor will take longer than the rock charge. or you input a beam and i preemtively put a shield, your choices are pretty though in that situation. you see if i put a shield because i know you will try to beam me or spray me then why should you get rewarded and not me? you input rock and start charging i put a wall... shouldn't i get not only the reward of not taking damage (which would be a 0 sum reward, like you waste 1 second and I waste 1 second.) Countering needs to favor the one that correctly countered, and especially if they made the right decision. how many times do you get like a fire ward to be hit by frost. see when you make a wrong decision you will probably die, and if you make the right decision then you should probably live and get some advantage of killing your opponent.
point is that at higher level of skill being able to anticipate what your opponent will do is whtat starts to matter. this is also why putting a water/fire/cold ward does not get rid of the debuff. if you are really good you would have put it before getting it.

agreed ... but with canceling wouldn't it give high level gameplay a far better tactical advantage ... with canceling in one single button you can do things like taunt or misleed your enemy
that's one thing about canceling .. the second is what Dasmir said ... my fingers would also become spaghetti in order to learn a cancel for each spell i try to cast and don't want to cast.
think of it this way .. you are in a fight and you want to throw a punch ... before you throw a punch you can stop doing that, it's called faking a move and is really easy to do because it's natural.
in magica trying to cancel yourself shouldn't be so hard and unnatural ... also i get everything you said about the advantage and disadvantage of first moves and counter moves in a battle, i both played chess and watched samurai training, and in both, although less obvious you can indeed fake an attack and in both it's a more natural motion easy to pull off. even in dota and lol there is such a thing as faking an attack .. it's less apparent as well but it is there at high level play. it's when you charge at your enemy and try to pull out a move from him that is easy to dodge then you attack him because his spell is on cooldown, again easy to do.
that's why i don't see why spell canceling shouldn't be in the game in an easier form than it's current one. because if you get spammed by frost and you miss a button in trying to get out of this ( mind you the wizard wars gamplay being fast paced like it is ) it's really hard to undo that mistake you just made and instead of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up even more by trying to cancel a spell of 3 elements ( a spell that you can cast faster than you can cancel ... at any level of gameplay i assure you ) ... it just seems like you get to be your worst enemy without a proper cancel key than with the already implemented sistem of cancel each individual element ...
not saying you should get rid of the system already in place for cancel , just to add the one that cancels the elements you have already in que .. would like to hear a devs opinion on this ..
to summ down everything i just said for those impatient to read everything and for any other errors in this post :
-canceling yourself shouldn't be so hard
-with this canceling system that is already in the game it feels like you become your worst enemy
-if compared to a dota or lol situation to stop yourself from doing something you just don't do it. here if you do start prepparing a spell you can't stop as fast ( even if you get in to a magicka role play .. if you do a verbal spell you can always stop , just stop talking ... )
-canceling a spell with one button would make combat a bit more tactical and feel a bit more natural.
