Installation screwed over
Ok I have the game on physical media, 4xDVDs. Started the install, went all the way through the 4th DVD, and now I can't play it yet because it has to download 20 odd more GB? WTF is going on here, what the hell is on the DVDs?

That's called karma, the karma when yoy make fun of those who bought it directly from Steam instead of retail.

Yeah except I did no such thing.

wait so after all the install on the disc was done it still has to download 20GB through the internet?! If that is the case ♥♥♥♥ this I'll just wait and play this later. My internet isn't the greatest and I was going to just get the physcial copy because of the size. Not now if I have to still download 20GB that's insane.

I'm aware of megatexures and the Idtech 5 engine but that doesn't really explain why do we need to still "download" 20GB after already having bought the phsyical disc? Is this true or do you mean install 20GB still left on the 4th disc?

So can someone confirm that 20GB is still needed after buying the retail copy? Yes or No

uh the poster here did
disc copies of games these days need an online activation to prevent piracy

or course they do derp.
persPaladin May 19, 2014 @ 7:07pm
Yeah online activation wouldn't bother me. Even a reasonably sized day one patch wouldn't generally be too bad.

Might as well have bought digital[twbrtq.dm2303.livefilestore.com]

Not bloody happy mate. I bought the physical media too because I only have limited wifi access where I live, it costs $50 AUD for 6 GB of data and I still have to install 10GB??? It DOES NOT SAY ON THE PACKAGING THAT THERE IS A FURTHER ONLINE INSTALL NEEDED. This is total bullcrap and I feel completely ripped off by this. I cannot play the game without the update which means it is not an update but an essential part of the game which should have been included with the physical copy. The XBox One version DID NOT need this update so you can't tell me it could not have been provided. Physical copies are for those who cannot download the game. Online activation okay, 10GB download is not. I am left wanting my bloody money back because I'm obviously not going to get to play this game anytime soon. Thanks for nothing Machinegames/Bethesda, you screwed me royally.

I wonder if this generation will ever see the day of downloads being a thing of the past and downloading being more a quality issue then a speed issue. In other words, downloads would be instant but instant downloads are avaliable to anyone but the drawback is quality of the download and a higher risk of corruption in a few of the files etc.. but instant downloads are a no waiting game and provided to everyone. Longest downloads would be a max of 2-4 mins and quality of downloads would be 100% integrity and you had a option when downloading files on the internet.

Someday I wish this to come to past. Downloading is becoming a dial up issue. It should be "wtf is downloading"

Apparently this is a known issue with Steam, not the game. There's a support article about it here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382. I wish I had seen that earlier. I bought the game on physical disc precisely to avoid the d/l requirement, so I'm still gutted. It would be nice if Valve/Steam would fix things so that installing from physical media installs from... you know, physical media. There's no point in me stopping the d/l now since there is less than a GB left. Waste of bandwidth and my time.

Thanks for the info persPaladin. Tried it but unfortunately no go. It has started downloading that 10Gb as per before. Good luck with the game mate, sadly I will have to go without.

So annoying, I've now been waiting 2 hours plus for my download to finish, so I can actually play this. For some reason, I'm having to download 40.7gb after installing from disk. That makes something like 90gb altogether, which cant be right.

Yeah it isn't right. Valve's/Steam's installer is buggered. When you enter the code from the DVD, Steam immediately begins downloading the 40.7GB install in the background. Then your installation from the DVDs "appears" to proceed normally, but after DVD 4 is done, you get to wait for however much of the 40.7GB is left to download and Steam appears to discard your installation from the physical media. This is absolute rubbish and completely screws over those of us that purchased physical media rather than the digital download. My view is that it shouldn't be some kind of huge deal to put a fix in their installer that stops the downloading automatically if you are installing locally. The fix I link to in the thread does apparently work sometimes or for some people - (I haven't tried it as by the time I became aware of it, I only had about 1GB left to d/l) but we shouldn't have to do tricks like that to get physical media to install. Like I said earlier, I specifically purchased physical media to avoid the download. At the time I purchased this title I was on a 50GB internet plan, and this would have easily pushed me right over. I was merely "lucky" that I had upgraded my plan in the interim between purchase and install. Even so, I don't appreciate Steam wasting my time and bandwidth to download a title I have on DVD.

Perhaps a mass complaint would get us all some free stuff or something!

Well I plan on posting about it on their Twitter and Facebook accounts at least.
