So I pre-ordered, got it today, 4 dvd's, run the install which takes almost 1.5 hours with the media, once it finishes I go to steam and it is busy with a 40Gb download! Another 4-odd hours to go! Seriously? Really? Wtf did I get the media for then...ffs!

I had that once with another game, I think it's a bug with Steam or something else went wrong. Much of the stuff it's downloading what you just installed off the discs. It should only need to download 10GB (a patch). There's a way to fix it but no matter what you do now it's going to be time consuming (and I don't know remember how to fix it).

For me it was a 29 gig download. A 3 1/2 hour install was somewaht annoying. All they had to do was add a couple of more disc's "store bought" to bring it down to about a 3 to 4 gig download like VAULVE games do and they would still get there copy proteection!

Yeah, there has been a bug with steam for years now that can cause a game installed by disk to download and reinstall itself after the disk install is finished. I've had it happen in the past, and have never found a reason for it. For smaller games, fine. But for this 44GB game, its a real pain. Sorry to hear you got hit with it.

For future reference, I've found that if your rig did the download/reinstall thing then it will continue to do it with whatever game it randomly selected to do it to in the first place if you ever dump it and reinstall it. Even removing steam, deleteing the steam directory, and cleaning your registry from all traces of steam does not fix it. Only a format and fresh OS install seems to correct the issue. So you might want to leave the game on your system for a while, just in case you feel the need to do the replay thing.

Steam discards your physical install and starts downloading the 40.7GB when you put the registration code in. There's plenty of folks upset about it.

Wait, did you register your key before you started doing the disk install? I assumed that you started the disk install (which asks for the key at the start of the install), but does not pull the game down from steam unless you have that bug. If you went to register the key first via steam and then started the disk install, steam will overide the disks and do the download thing.

Or they could've just put the game on one Blu-ray disc.
