If developers are just going to pander to the low hanging fruit (mainstream console hardware versus high end gaming PC's) and not make a proper PC version (even the reviled Thief allowed manual saves, although it didn't allow jumping!) it'll just cost them on their bottom line.
I have been playin "Assassin's Creed IV BF" and the auto save in this game is crap.
Now I got "Wolfenstein The New Order" with auto save crap.
I want to save the game (not in a fight or so) when I will not when the game will.
It's not a matter of dying that has me worried TYVM, it's about enjoying the game. I'm not going to ever try and do a speed run thru a game. One of my favorite things to do is go thru and try different scenarios, try doing things differently. I do something, manual save, then try it again from the previous save for variety, or to conserve ammo. A good game will have you always just a bit short on supplies to keep you engrossed. If I waste all my ammo on one area, only to find in the next I'm screwed, what fun is that? Or go thru a BS level only to die and have to restart way back.....I've literally quit playing games because some poor level design caused me to have to waste 20 minutes just to get back to one BS part of a game, only to die again.
Take Dishonored, yes I could run thru and stab and slash to the end. Or I could try using Bend Time, fire a Crossbow and attach a Spring Razor to the bolt. Or use the Rewire Tool and fry them in a wall of light. If I only had checkpoints, I couldn't try all these at a certain point.
Hence why I won't spend premium cash on a cheapo consolitis port.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I want to be able to try many different way, plowing through ennemies with a turret that I just lifted from its support, firing like a madman; then loading a previous save to make the same section with knife in stealth.
Beside, sometime it's pretty annoying when you miss a secret of a few meter but a cinematic event block the way behind you and you are unable to get back to get it. The only frakking option is to begin the whole level again from the beginning, which is utterly stupid. How can devs think it a better option to get rid of function and to give the player less freedom of choice ?
The game is good, but the lack of manual save is annoying as hell.
