Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Is this game as good as Return to Castle Wolfenstein?
I still play the classic game and I enjoy that creepy story. Is this one nearly as good?

While I agree with you that there are many homage to the previous Wolfenstein games, it was my opinion that while all have similar events, this Wolfenstein game was taking place on/in a different timeline/universe than previous ones.
I personally felt none of them really picked up on exactaly the same timeline of the previous ones. This isnt a complaint in any way shape or form, just an observation.
Caroline Becker talks about the exact events that occurred to her in Wolfenstein (2009), being shot by Hans Grosse and floating towards the light (from the queen geist castle boss). Deathshead's bio page also mentions him barely escaping the zeppelin crash (ending of Wolfenstein 2009) and the near death experience giving him a new found joy in life.

References to RtCW are much sparcer but there are a few. Again BJ mentions swimming through Deathshead's X-Labs in 43 and Deathshead himself is up to his old super soldier program after the failure of the veil projects.

New Order is a sequel to RtCW & Wolf 09 with recurring characters, continuing plotlines and direct references to previous events. The only retconning that occurs between the games is the switching of voice actors.

In an all but infinite multiverse many universe/timeline will be similar if not almost identical, while in others events would be far removed from each other by decissions made by indivudials that differ from universe to universe.
Not trying to argue, I guess its a matter of opinion.

One could say that any sequel takes place in an alternate reality to the original. I'm in no way hostile towards you or your opinion on the game, I'm just trying to understand why you consider New Order to be an alternate timeline instead of a sequel when it directly references previous games including one entire cutscene devoted to reminding players of Wolf 09 events.

PS: I love alternate reality storylines. Before the game was released I actually assumed that the plot of the game would involve time travel/alternate universe jumping to set history right.

I just feel there are subtle differences that are clues that you may in fact be in an alternate universe. I cant say I really know if the developers even considered this when writting the story or if Im just reading something in that isnt meant to be there.
I thought a major clue was the option to follow on the Fergus or Wyatt timeline, two similar but divergent universe.
I myself even entertained the idea of them somehow using a time travel, trans dementional portal plot line to somehow tie into the DooM series. They own all the IP now so..
But either way, I guess it really doesnt matter. Same or different universe/timeline, it's still a great game.
TNO is a direct sequel to both RtCW and Wolf2009. Wolf3D (and the original Castle Wolfenstein games) are not a part of the current storyline.

Even though the nightmare easter egg suggests that escaping Castle Wolfenstein in Wolf3D was something BJ actually did, minus the bit about killing Hitler.

Thats an interesting take and you know, I hope you end up being right in a sequel or dlc.

This. RtCW itself was kind of a reboot/remake of Wolfenstein 3D. A lot of the broader objectives of the Wolf 3D episodes are reimagined in RtCW. The first mission esacping from Wolfenstein just as it was in 3D and one of the missions invovles chemical warfare except in RtCW its with V2 Rockets. Deathshead himself was essentially a rebooted Dr. Schabbs (From RtCW manual). Wolf 3D is referenced in the modern Wolfensteins just as the classic Dooms are referenced in Doom 3 despite being a reboot/remake of 1.

Wolfenstein 3D itself was a bit of a remake of the 80s Silas Warner Castle Wolfenstein & Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. Castle Wolfenstein's objective was to escape the titular castle while Beyond's objective was to kill Hitler similar to the first and third episodes of Wolfenstein 3D.
Pull that rigger Rayo, you will love it.

Thanks, will try it
It's way better. Much more varied, better gfx, better combat, better story.
This game isn't even as good as Wolf 3d; too much talking, too much forced stealth
