Interactive gas pipes on the moon base

I'm playing this mission for the second time and am curious about the red pipes in almost every room of the moon base. They all have security chains that are breakable with the LKW and big switches that you can then throw. But what does this do? The designers' attention to detail is too great for this not to have a function, can anyone advise?

You can blow them up without cutting the chains, so I was wondering the same.

Shoot the chains from a safe distance when enemies are near them and enjoy the fun.
