Keyboard problem: BJ keeps slipping into a slow pace, can't sprint, can't pick up

I really really want to love this game, it has so many good things going for it. The brutal keyboard controls on Windows 10 are making it really hard though.

The biggest problem I'm having with is a total deal breaker. There's something I'm doing on my keyboard that makes BJ drop into a slowed-down pace where he moves super slow, can't run, and can't pick up items. It happens whenever I press CTRL to crouch and then CTRL to get back up again. But there are other times it seems to happen randomly.

Whenever this happens I can usually press C (all default bindings) and he starts running again. However sometimes that doesn't work. In these cases, pressing X usually gets him back to normal again. But needless to say, if this happens in the middle of a fight, you're already boned.

Has anybody else experienced this? I've seen lots of other complaints online about the key controls, but not this one. Am I hitting a button that's putting him into some kind of a stealth mode? This is a showstopper unfortunately. You can't win the tricky fights when BJ randomly stops running.

does the sound slow down to ? have that prob when i crt for a stealth kill

No, sound is fine, performance is fine.

I just poked at it some more. Turns out this only happens in combat situations. Crouch followed by uncrouch puts you into slow mode. Some other random key presses somehow put you into slow mode. C and X usually work for getting you back to normal, if you're still alive.

Pretty sure this is just a rare bug since I can't find anyone else saying the same thing. Only workarounds I've found are to rely heavily on stealth, and play in easy difficulty :( :(
