[id5Tweaker] Change FPS Limit, Force CVars And More
What Is this?

This is a discussion thread for the id5 Tweaker. You can find it along with additional information as a Steam guide here or on PCGamingWiki here[community.pcgamingwiki.com].

The id5Tweaker is a small mod that allows additional configuration of id Tech 5 games. Its features include the option to change the FPS limit, force the value of CVars and additional game specific settings.

Description

Although the id Tech 5 engine offers a surprising amount of flexibility in regards to configurations through its CVar system, it is inconvenient to use because some CVars won't be saved, are restricted or have too narrow bounds (e.g. the FOV in the Wolfenstein games).

Additionally, there are some problems that can't be fixed by CVars at all, such as the limit of 60 FPS. While there are some methods out there which supposedly should unlock the FPS, they don't seem to work or ceased to work after the games were patched.

This mod aims to make the overall configuration easier while at the same time to offer additional options for certain problems. The mod is used through a set of new console commands which can either be directly entered into in the in-game console or applied by using an optional config file. The Tweaker can change the FPS limit, force restricted CVars without having to use workarounds such as the cvaradd command and push some CVars out of their bounds. It also offers some game specific options.

Features

All Games
  • Change FPS limit
  • Force restricted or read-only CVars
  • Push some CVars out of their bounds (e.g. FOV)
  • Bind opening the console to any key
  • Bundle configuration in a single config file
  • Easy to install
RAGE (32-/64-Bit)
  • Bind the use of items to individual keys
  • Bind toggle versions of aim down sights or sprint
  • Disable parts of the HUD (e.g. crosshair or minimap)

I know where you are coming from. After I bought my 144hz monitor some time ago, 60 really became the new 30 for me. Especially with shooters, 100+ FPS really makes a difference. That was one of the primary reasons I starting developing the mod.

Exactly yeah. This game in particular seemed even choppier because of all the film grain and depth of field. I've been wanting to play this game for 3 years now and I'm just now able to play it comfortably with this mod.

Glad you like it. Have fun!

Hi @Methanhydrat, For non steam games, I placed it in the root folder of Wolfenstein: New order installed directory. But I am not able to see the unlocked fps yet. Is there a way of knowing whether the dll was loaded or not?

I am not sure what you mean by non Steam games. As far as I am aware, all Wolfenstein: The New Order versions require Steam.

You can check whether the fix is loaded correctly by looking into the console. It prints status information about what is going on. If you do not see any ouput in the console, the Tweaker is not loaded correctly.

Hi @Methanhydrat, using dependency walker I checked, your dll file will get loaded, but my fps is locked at 60 fps. vsync is disabled. Any suggestions?

Any game using DirectInput will load the DLL when it is put in the same directory as the executable, that does not mean it will be loaded correctly. As stated in the documentation, the mod requires the exact version of the supported games, because it relies on specific addresses in the executable. Any other version probably will not work, because the addresses are very likely to be different.

As I said in my last post, check the output of the ingame console. If the Tweaker is loaded correctly, it will print status information and tell you whether something went wrong. Also keep in mind, that you have to set a new FPS limit in the config of the mod, otherwise the FPS limit will not be changed, and reamain at 60.

The only way this game would be running outside of steam as a non-steam game is that it's a pirate version. All versions[pcgamingwiki.com] are steam versions.

Appreciate the Mod, but it's not working for me either. I have the ini files in the correct folder, upon toggling my specific frame rate from command I get no response. I have the most recent version of the game purchased on steam 05/18/2017.

I do get the "cyan" font when first using the command SetFpsLimit stating the fps limit is set but no change in my fps followed by no cyan font afterwards.

If this is not the correct version where do I access the one agreeable with your mod?

Did you remove the ';' before the 'id5Tweaker_SetFpsLimit 140' in the config file?

Thanks for the reply. The ; has been removed in the config file. I can hit "-" to reset settings in game and I get a quick pause of it loading them. For whatever reason it will not go past 60 fps for the life of me though. I don't know what I'm missing. :hoji_surprised:

id5Tweaker_SetFpsLimit 140 is manually set in command and free'd in the config file

I'll keep fiddling on my end. I have got to be missing something.

I GOT IT. I have a g-sync monitor and had to basically reset the hz on it in nvidia control panel. After that I had to turn gysnc off in a new order settings via nvida control panel. Thanks for the mod, running this thing at 180 fps right now.

Just wanted to add massive thanks for this mod. The FPS unlocker works great, and has made one of my all time favourite games that bit more enjoyable. You, Sir, are a legend.

No, this is a singleplayer-only game and Valve generally does not care whether you are using any local modifications.
