Wolfenstein: The New Order

Card Test
Spoilers for Chapter 3.

I just played the sequence on the train where you are asked to choose cards. It was a great scene, but apparently the outcome is the same regardless of what you choose. The thing is, I think the right answers could have made a certain logical sense.

Choice 1 is between a blue eye and some teeth. Obviously the Aryan blue eye makes sense here.

Choice 2 is between a black and blue butterfly and a white flower. Again, the pure white flower evokes the Aryan idea whereas the black butterly should be less beautiful to a N__i.

Choice 3 is between a spider and a pile of skulls, and you have to pick the scarier one. Presumably an experienced N__i in this fictional universe would have dealt with mass graves and concentration camps anywhere they were built around the world, and would not be afraid of human bones. Therefore, the spider seems like the one to pick here.

Anyway, I am looking waaaay too deeply into this, but I really did feel like there was a right choice to make here, and it's disappointing that it was all a ruse.

I liked that feeling, I choose Eyes, Butterfly, and spider. Only difference is that the butterfly had the same color tone as the nazi uniforms.

I would have liked that what you chose may have given a small perk or something to make it feel like your choice matters, but it was just a fun way of introducing engel.

I thought that was the whole point of the card test, a ruse to place the subject under stress so the interogator can gauge the subject's body language.

Sure, that is the point, but I'm just saying I would have liked it if the game reward you for some critical thinking, as opposed to discarding your answers.

You are looking way to deep into it. The fact that you wrote this out though, means the point of the scene was achieved. You came up with answers you thought were right based on the context you where given. And then you started to think about right/wrong answers and why they are right/wrong.

I believe the point is illustrated at the end, where you are told the test is fake. This kind of test would not have any relationship to ethnicity, but you are made to think about the full concept because you are forced to have to deal with it and th eimplications it brings. I believe there have even been real life examples of this (not that I can find off hand, though this one is close: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/07/gay-straight-face-shape_n_4232987.html), and the point of this scene is to make you aware of the falicy of the exercise.

I like your answer, thanks :D:
actually the white flower does make sense from your point of view, I could be mistaken but the flower is an Edelweiß, which is not only the national flower of Austria, but also was seen as a symbol for purity, especially during the war, plenty of german and austrian officers wore a metal edelweiss on their uniforms as well, which heightens the point of picking the flower

also if the name sounds familiar, thats because the song Edelweiss from The Sound of Music is about the flower

Interesting, thanks for the input!
So, whatever answer i give, the outcome is the same? I choose eyes, butterfly and get a warning from her to not make the wrong descision and then choose skulls and get a gun to my head. Her companion calm down her and i can go without being harmed.

I was wondering if i choose another cards, maybe there is a another outcome?

Eyes, butterfly, skull (after caching my hand trying to choose spider) = same outcome
Quite an astute assessment OP.
Interesting replies as well.
Am I the only one who went for the gun in 5 billion different ways?

Nope 👍
Never ends well, but hey...it was there right ?
Can someone explain what would happen if you try to run and not sit down???
You will die a glorious death.

She straight up tells you what would have happened if you chose other cards: nothing. The gun in your face at the end was a ruse, to make you nervous and amuse herself. In her own words, "if you were not Aryan, you would have gone for the gun". That you sat and played the game at all was proof enough to her that you were not "impure" and had nothing to hide
