If you own OMD1 some of its maps will be available to play as a bonus in OMD2, so it doesn't hurt to have them both even if you only plan to play OMD2.

That said the answer has two parts.

Story;
OMD2 picks up the story after the conclusion in OMD1. It will give you a brief recap and you should have no problem following along as the story is pretty simple. It is amusing though due to the personalities involved.
Still, for the story and setting I would recommend playing OMD1 first as it has the character introductions and sets the stage well. I also think it is funnier than OMD2.

Mechanics:
OMD2 is superior to OMD1 in pretty much every way mechanically. For a start you can rebind your keys, it has WAY more weapons, traps, and upgrades. Plus you can reset your unlock choices, the finicky weaver system is gone, and freezing actually involves freezing an orc rather than coloring them blue in an idle animation. xD
Also, OMD2 has coop, which can be a huge selling point if you have a friend to bond over orc slaughter with.
So, for mechanics I'd say play OMD2 for sure.

Hope that helps.

Personaly, I'd play OMD1 for the humor/setting first then move to OMD2.

The biggest downside to OMD2 is that all the maps are literally designed with 2 players in mind, which makes soloing the game more frustrating than fun since you need to constantly run around and have eyes in the back of your head to prevent enemies from getting in the rift.

For a single player game, OMD1 Is superior in my opinion.

Yep it's a good game too 😊 even it's not a great story it's fun to know it.
Here is the thing while OMD 2 is the clear winner in terms that it is overall better game than OMD 1. I will give the original few things that it did better than the sequel:

* linear progression where you unlock stuff with each new level, which is personally to me way better introduction to the game mechanics considering that each level was also to some extent designed to showcase the said item but not be a complete must to complete with it.

* Weavers personally to me are better way of promoting different playstyles and traps builds than OMD2 "select whatever upgrades you want" and made the game more interesting.

* Difficulty is increasing in steady progression with each level even on nightmare mode in OMD 1 while in OMD 2 its all over the place. Which has more to do with OMD 2 player progression and almost all of act 2 levels feel like afterthought from level design perspective.
