Is there a trick to fishing?

The tutorial says to hit the up key at a "moderate pace," but I've tried hitting it at all sorts of paces and whether the fish actually reels in or just stays at the exact same place while tension rises seems completely arbitrary, I almost wonder if it has to do with me playing on a 144hz monitor or something. I'm usually someone who 100%s fishing in these games, but after 14 of the initial 20 worms going to complete misses, this one is on the verge of defeating me.

There is:

1. start pulling once a fish is interested in (but slowly, or it will stop)
   
2. buy the upgrades for the rod and new bait with chapter 3-6
   
3. The final 2 fishings spots have new fish when you enter a house at the sea one.

The chapter 1 fishing is more of a tutorial, so you don't have to break your fingers to catch the green fishes.

Some additional tips:
The bait vendors will pay twice as much for fish.
If you are low on cash, just use a good bait to lure a fish closer to you and retract the line so you can use a cheap bait instead.
As long as the fish moves on top of your bait, it doesn't matter which one you are using.

Only the twin brothers in chapter 4-6 pay double.
But in chapter 5 is an easier way to make money.

Fishing is far too difficult

I've not gotten far yet but i am now at the spot where you are introduced to fishing and i needed to smash that arrow up button for over a minute for the smallest fish (1 star rank), that's just not a fun way to fish.
I am aware you get items that make it easier later but it shouldn't be THAT hard without them.

Or am i missing something?

There is a little trick:
Start pulling in slowly once you have the interest of the fish.
Not too fast or it won't follow the bait.
With that trick you can even quick catch some fishes once they bite.

Also have you changed the game speed in the setups of the game?
Play that mini game with normal 1 speed and it becomes much easier.

The chapter 1 fishing pond is more as a tutorial and a "what feature you will find in the full version" of the demo.
So you don't have to catch each fish here.
Especially the green ones.

With chapter 3 you can buy some upgrades for the fishing rod, making fishing much easier.

Tried that trick, didn't work either because the fish pull too fast down, so i guess it's not for me.

The difference lies in interested and bite.
A fish shows interest with the "???!" icon and will follow your bait if you start pulling it in slowly (only the Salmon is too intelligent to do that).
Once it bites start spamming up again, but the distance should have shrank.

I understood that and i've pretty much almost got it to the edge of the water.
The issue is i physically can't spam that button as much as the game wants me to.

Just note that it gets really easier with the upgrate gear from chapter 3 onwards

I like to mash "up" on two input devices (Xbox controller and keyboard) at the same time. This seems to work for me, but maybe it's a placebo effect.

I try to draw the fish closer first if I have the right bait, and then mash with two fingers on the arrow key, or arrow key and numpad.

I tried the fishing system just a few hours ago, fishing in Chapter 1.
Following the advice in this thread I caught several 1 to 2 star fish but the higher ones are not feasible I think.

With the PS5 controller, once the fish hooks up I just spam UP with the pad... it takes enough finger "apm" (or fingers, since with index and middle finger on top of each other I click faster). :)

yes, it might not be possible as they re-appear again anyway in later chapters where you can upgrade your fishing rod. so probably just meant to make you wonder about it and put a footnote?

Definitely possible, though likely not something you're meant to do. You're at most missing a little money if you don't fish out the lake in chapter 1.

Can I go back to that fishing spot in Chapter 1 later in the story? I have already reached Chapter 2 at the moment.
