Starter tips (potentially spoily)
So I've had a couple games I've abandoned due to kinda messing up - hoping to save future players some time and heartache!

  • Consider playing on the Hanging Gardens map. The Mountain Pass map is probably the most interesting visually, but Hanging Gardens has the easiest layout to get around and look for resources.
  • Don't expand too fast! Taxes are expensive! Make sure you have a nest egg saved up before you buy your next plot, and make sure whatever resource that next workstation needs, you have enough of. For example, if you buy the apothecary but don't have enough herbs to make potions, heroes will start to get mad at you.
  • Fully upgrade your shops! Click on the shopkeeper to see what's missing to max out a shop. The cheapest way to max out the Decoration stat currently is, surprisingly, to add more floors and walls. You can add expensive furniture later, but each piece only adds 1 point, no matter the cost.
  • Don't expand your heroes' equipment too fast! At the start, when you only have the blacksmith, you might be tempted to give one hero class 2 swords and heavy armor. You will reallly be hurting for metal if you do that. Stick with just 1 item per hero to start, and if you find you're swimming in resources later, you can edit the class and give them another piece. You should probably have 2 classes with 1 item each, or maybe even 3 classes with 1 item each, before considering giving each of them a second and third item.
  • Don't spam slay quests! While it feels like you should be giving your heroes the hardest quests they can handle because they give more resources, if you do too many slay quests, the game will throw bosses at you before you can handle them. Suck it up and do more gather quests, even if they're a bit easier for your heroes.
  • Have a good variety of gear quality! A lot of your income comes from heroes buying equipment, and while it's tempting to rush to legendary gear using your upgrade tokens, they will stop buying gear if they already have the best available. Though don't worry too much because then you'll unlock the next tier and they'll start buying again.
  • Save your upgrades for upgrading Epic gear to Legendary! If you're really swimming in upgrades, upgrade Rare>Epic>Legendary, but upgrades become more rare the farther along you get, so don't waste them on upgrading Normal gear.
  • Money is really tight early on, but it gets easier once you have lots of resource farms. Tier 1 herbs, leather, and cloth can each be farmed at their respective workshops by placing upgrade items, and once you have a lot of those, you wind up with more of those resources than you know what to do with. This has 2 benefits: you never have to make quests for those T1 resources anymore, freeing up your heroes for other stuff, and you can sell all the extras to the trader.
  • When crafting food, you'll notice that adding the extras gives more of an Excellent % chance boost for the 3rd and 4th food item of each tear, than the 1st and 2nd. If you have enough raw food, it's worthwhile to always make those 3rd and 4th items, with all the extras. Heroes pay more for higher quality, but more importantly, better quality items are a morale boost, which is invaluable for keeping heroes around as well as their quest success chance.

I may add to this if I think of anything else. Also please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about any mechanics, or add tips of your own.
Edit: added a couple more tips, and thanks for the awards!

Also,
  • Once you defeat a boss you can merrily slay their former minions. As far as I know there is no downside to doing this.

  • You might consider buying extra stockpiles for the inn right from the beginning to allow you to craft enough food to quickly level up the innkeeper before the weapon master leaves. This also increases your chance of making higher quality meals.

Great job mate!
Here are my ten cents:

1. Dont waste T1 metal - youll need tons of it late game. Dont hesitate to send heroes on effortless quest, just to get you more of it (goblin boss quests are great for that);
2. Early game focus on protection potions, but once you reach good moral and gear score of 60+ switch to XP potions. Gear score of 90+, 100% moral and lvl 15 wont get you to Dragon slayer;
3. I consider tannery as the best third building choice - shoulders and helms can be used by all classes;
4. 2h weapons give double the gear score 1h weapons give. So consider making classes that use those - archers and mages. Dont forget to assign the propper main attribute for them;
5. Enjoy the game :)

How do you cook? I tried clicking on the innkeeper counter and it just defaults to delete or move

Click on the counter itself instead of the actual innkeeper.
