Also when talking to the weapon master you have the option to train your current class. By pressing the list icon next to the X (remove class button), this cost 1 royal token and far less gold and can be done early into the game. Doing this will allow you to add new proficiencies to your current class (for example wear heavy armour).
At the start may be tricky to keep up with the resources to craft armours but once you get good managing your quests, you will be fine. Until then you can use the trader to buy a few resources every time he is in town while checking that the price doesn't spike too much.
