Let me explain, just because the game run at 60 fps doesn't mean you will see improvement in 2D games, because each frame in the 2D games has to be drawn/coded individually, doesn't matter if it has 60fps but if the character/or objects only had 5 frame image you won't see any differences, specially in RPG games, sure you can probably will have better feel/response in Platformer games
This is why in old SNES games the smoothest game mostly are platformers, like Super Mario World, and Donkey Kong, but that's not necessarily because of higher FPS, but mostly because it has more animation per frame.
I mean Octopath Traveler 2 on PC at 120fps looks, feels, controls through the menus, and transitions between screens soooooo much more smoother and better than it does at 30.
It just straight up feels better to play overall. This is a constant when it comes to framerate, regardless of genre IMO.
@OP there's a demo here on steam, and it actually defaulted to 240fps with options in the settings to dial it back from there.
It does indeed run and play ALOT smoother both in the field and in battle than it did on my Switch, and hey I just started the Twilight of Japan chapter from the demo and didn't stutter like hell in the intro as it pans over the fortress, so that's already a testament to how much better it is on PC
Of course you're not gonna see any difference in the actual sprite's animation, but there are a ton of elements that animate according to FPS like your character moving across the screen, and the attack effects, etc. You can surely notice a difference when you go into higher FPS territory.
Sure, but that's modern game in general, most of games even the 2D games have significant more animation per frame than the old games, The Octopath Traveler (1 or 2) has significant animation compared to games let say, Final Fantasy III.
My point is It's not specifically the FPS in general that makes this type of games feel smoother. it's how many animation they actually use/draw for the game.
I haven't bought this game, but I know that this is a remade SNES Original, while the VFX and all those Spell effects is definitely looks/and run better in 60fps, but the original animation for the character isn't that much, and it's by design, this game was made before Chrono Trigger.
If you already have switch version I don't understand why you need to pay extra to get pc version, however it's your money.
Generally looking from the stats, square enix has really bad reputation for their PC ports, especially their remade/remasters.
Not true of the previous three HD-2D games, however. All of them have been fine. This one also seems fine after almost five hours.
As for the actual answer to the OP's question, as far as I know it's 60. It looks that way anyway and wouldn't make sense otherwise considering previous games. I'll have to pay attention when I play later....
No kidding. Massive difference in 30fps vs 60fps, even in a sprite based game. Far more fluid.
I'm sure you can notices the fps differences, I've tried the demo, it was nice, noticeable in area when you moving around town/area, but majority scene in this game is you are talking to npc's and/or doing battle, also for some reason idk why, the 30fps option actually tearing my screen, so I have to run it at 60fps.
The question was, is it worth it to spend another $60 for a game that OP already own. For me no, especially if I just want higher fps, but then again I wasn't the one asking for it.
Now if OP doesn't have it yet, and just making comparison between switch version vs steam version, then the STEAM version is always the best version, it's no brainer. The game even have option to run 120 fps.
Wouldn't mind giving the original another run-through since I've forgotten a lot of it, and I'm hungry for more (I never did kill Galdera either!!!
Running significantly better here and there being Dozens upon dozens of mods over on Nexus Mods (Like an ability to save in the Boss Rush at the end
Can't agree with the port comment. Things like Chrono Cross/Secret of Mana thing were *universally* bad on all platforms so that's a wash; but the PC stuff specifically has been fine from what I played. Octopath 2 might be one of the better PC ports/versions of a JRPG I've ever played with a brilliant K+M layout and intuitive controls, graphic and FPS settings etc.
I've heard similar things about Triangle Strategy and this Live a Live demo ran like a dream.
