Beckwourth usually ends up with 20+ pelts. Don't worry about party condition, they won't die.
- I agree with Wilson on trading for bullets before you leave, and taking at least 6 hunting points throughout the trip, as well as mainly aiming for deer and bison.
- Bit of a lifehack you can do in the mid-point of the trail, if you're unsure of his progress and want to narrow it down: when he asks you how many pelts you have, always tell the truth. I say this because, whenever you tell him a number, his programming hits an important if-loop. If the number you said is higher than his number, he will always start the snarky "Oh yeah? Well I have... [your number + 1] pelts, so I'm winning!" dialogue (I'm paraphrasing but you get it). But, if the number you said is lower than his number, he's always honest about how many he has. Why does this matter? Because if he's s snarky jerk about it, you know for a fact that you're winning, it's just unclear by how much because he's programmed to always lie if you're winning, so he'll never reveal his hand. And if he's sincere, then you know you're behind, but you know exactly how much you're behind by. This is invaluable info because it lets you adapt your strategy as needed for the second leg of the trip.
- There is a "theory" (I say this because it's spread as fact, and seemed to work for me, but seems very difficult to 100% confirm) in the achievement hunting community for this game, and the theory is that talking to Isaac prior to starting the trail increases the chances that the wagon will get damaged, so I recommend NOT using the Talk -> Isaac interaction unless you're specifically going for "The Beckwourth Trail" in-game-journal achievement (if you want help for that one let me know, I have a really strong strategy for it but don't want to bog this thread down with it unless someone asks).
Hope this helps!
The Beckwourth Trail is one of two journal achieves of the non-grindy number I still need to do and have been unable to proc. If you know how and would be willing to say how, I'd very much appreciate it.
Your competition will end up with 28 pelts. At least that's how much he had the two attempts I made.
The strat I ended up using was to acquire bullets by trading pelts for them. You can usually get 3 pelts every time you go hunting. Be conservative with ammo but hit at least 3 things each time. Try to have your main hunter do most of the hunting which means watch his stamina. You don't need medicine so you can trade it. Plot your route. If you consider using 5 or less bullets each time hunting you can hunt a few times before going to trade a few pelts for more bullets. By the end I had 44 pelts.
Essentially, trade at the arrow points for bullets, save them for the bigger targets that sometimes appear but hit the odd beaver too.
As for The Beckwourth Trail achievement for the journal, I got that by enforcing starvation from the start. You don't take any meat from any hunting or any other source. You also need to make your wagon as full as possible with pelts and survival items. And of course, never repair the wagon. Eventually, the party will slaughter 2 ox. If it happens early in the 2nd half of the journey, the single ox will struggle to keep it together and a wagon breakdown will occur late in the 2nd half. However, you need to be ahead of Beckwourth for him to be the one to find you and save you in order to get the achievement. While waiting and along the way, get hold of any source of morale and hygiene to avoid anything getting fatal.
