Can't hire a native guide at the snake river?

So I did the three island crossing at the Snake River, and when talking to people, one told me that it's a good idea to hire a native guide (and I recall doing the same at the Snake River in the original Oregon Trail game too).

However, I couldn't find any option to hire a native guide; the only options were to ford the river or caulk the wagon.

Am I missing something, or is there no option to hire a native guide in this game (even though you are told that you should do this)? Or is it only the southern route that allows hiring a native guide?

When they refer to hiring a guide, they mean the class itself at the start of a journey. They are unlocked by completing the Rendezvous journey.

Your best way to cross the Snake River is to stock up big time on pelts so you can maximise sealing for a caulk.
