You're gonna hear the good with the bad and as with any game, not every game is designed for everybody.
There are many reviews about this series and there are videos of how to play them, google CDRDave for a starter course of the X3 Alibon Prelube, How to play it.
The game is basically long and enduring space combat, trader, and anything you can do in space..except land on planets.
There is many mods to help enhance the gameplay, not many bugs, but there isn't a good instruction from the game unless you watch the videos of what other players have done and they do explain alot of how the game is played and what you can expect while playing.
X3 Terran Conflict is different, its more of a combat type of game.
With over 2000 hours of X3 AP, and only 41 hours of X3 TC, you can imagine which one I prefer...but there are some that got over 10,000 hours and that seem to say something..
But unless you view the videos and decide for yourself which only you can do...nobody can tell you that you will like it...or enjoy it's beautiful space and the evil Xenons.
I have more than 10k hours in TC and about 1100 in AP. The War Sectors make for a very different game than TC, however, I like to play as Terran so having that option in AP makes it my preferred game atm [If I needed to choose]
TC is better imho if you are simply wanting to experiment with the massive empire building. That way you avoid the loss of your wandering autotraders [I've tried Black and White lists... they don't always work]
If you are playing the game for the fights... then AP is your best choice - try playing the Terran start and get your own Ketana, though you will need to salvage a lot to pay for the needed upgrades and guns.
Don't wander into unauthorised areas, but do trade with the stations all the way past Oort belt. Takes a bit of patience but learn to Barter and take exotic goods in small amounts. First though try salvaging a few Terran Baldrics from the War Sectors to provide you with extra guns and a mobile storage space so you can trade larger quantities.
Remember the First Law of X is Save, save and save again.
EDIT Typos
You may as well play another game then. X3 without traders is a whole different game. I have played X3 so many ways but ultimately if you want the best of teh game you make a fleet of traders and try to create a working trade environment.
If you want to enjoy the game at its fullest you should at least try to make that empire. Other space sims can satisfy your pew pew pew desires - but nothing else can satisfy the empire building element. It's a bit like buying a 'choc-ice' and throwing away the chocolate.
I like AP best because it feels the more complete out of X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict (TC) and X3: Albion Prelude (AP). I also prefer playing as a terran myself and AP offers a much more complete Terran experience, at least for me. The vast majority of terran factories are missing from TC, There are mods for it, but even with the mods, the universe in TC is that much smaller.
Also at the traders thing: Once you reach a certain point of developement in any of the X games, no one wants to be manually telling 50+ different freighters of whatever kind to buy sell this and that here and there, so having traders as part of a fleet is helpful too.
Edit. Especially with so many scripts and mods.
I completely agree, and have often said as much.
@zanosg I've often played your way too. However, you can still keep control of your TS fleet if you keep them local and make protective fleets. It adds to the fun. I tend to play as though all my ships carry my real staff... so I hate to let them get killed. It does tend ot make the game more fun for me. :) Playing as Terran adds to the fun as you need to revitalise the Terran economy and that is really hard in AP because of the War Sectors cutting right acvross Terran space.
I have been to CDRDave's channel looking for the starter course of the X3 Albion Prelude
But all i find there is vids for Terran Conflict
I listed them in my Guide in order he did them. He only makes a few references to AP but really all his advice is mostly still valid in AP even wqhen he uses the TC environment.
The core differences are the impact the War Sectors have on trading as whichever faction is in control of them will shoot at YOUR ships even if you are otherwise high rep with them.
