The Springblossom is very fast (over 300m/s), has good maneuverability and it can equip experimental starburst shockwave cannons. While playing X3AP, these weapons were the only ones that have performed well against fighters. Unfortunately, they consume huge amounts of weapon energy.
The Springblossom's only drawback is the lower shieldpower, but this flaw can be compensated with speed and maneuverability.
As much as I like the Katana's design, it simply sucks due to its inferior weapons. EMPs are useless and Matter-Antimatter missiles too don't work well against fighters. Therefore, it fails as a corvette. The Yokohama frigate performs better against fighters, but it is not as efficient against bigger ships.
If you want to stick to Terran ships, you should try the Yokohama frigate.
It's tough, has a low hitbox and it can equip starbursts to quickly kill fighters. Besides, it takes down corvettes and frigates with M/AM missiles - an ammunition-based weapon which consumes nearly no weapon energy. Starbursts for fighters and M/AM for medium ships is a nice combo. However, the Yokohama sucks against capital ships, but that's what bombers and missile frigates are there for.
Another problem: frigates can't dock everywhere due to their bigger size.
