I'm just now getting back into X3 and am only just playing AP for the first time. (With mods, no less.) So, I'm a bit rusty at X3 mechanics.
But, IIRC, Player-owned Trade Stations are a bit finicky and don't work intuitively. The guide above was written to overcome some of their idiosyncracies, IIRC.
Did some searching, see this thread:

Trade Stations aren't the optimal way for you to sell your products. Basically, they have small inventories and a unique price setting that makes them unprofitable, if you try to handle it in a supposedly intuitive way. There really isn't any way to get around assigning a trader or a CAG to your trade station.
It's very possible someone has modded in a trade-station that does what you want. I'd love to have such a mod, too. But, after searching around for a little bit, I couldn't find any that specifically address the functionality (or lack of) with player-owned trade stations. Some replace them completely, but also may add unwanted capabilities or may be broadly incompatible with other mods.
If you find a mod that revamps the player-owned trade-station or, basically, creates a completely new station for the player to use (which is likely what would have to be done, since racial trade-stations wouldn't work as a template) then be sure to report back!
Here is the Mod Lists..look for OK Traders. read the readme file for installation and how to set it up. I have yet to lose one trader to enemy fire...and there is no leveling up your trader... he/she will make it work for you.
