"New" ships in Farnham's Legacy feedback
The new ships on the screenshots of this expansion look quite disappointing in my opinion. A stretched centaur with cargo modules on the side? A widened Boron TS? These don't look good. You don't see a car maker stretching one of their cars and calling it a new model? It just looks wrong.

I understand that the original game has lots of examples like this, especially the Cobra and Hyperion Vanguard but I believe these are the product of not having enough time to finish their designs properly.

If I got this right, the entire expansion is a community project. There are so many decent community ship remodels especially for these ships so why not include those instead of stretching and deforming the official ships?

That's just my opinion and feedback. Good luck with the project and all the best!

Never seen Limo's? They are often literally stretched versions of regular cars.

Edit: and it is free, so dun expect a huge development investment.

imo a ship designs doesn't matter too much at all.
especially for ts ships which you just equip, assign to a home base and give command to run errands for your complex. it's fire and forget. you never get to see the ship too much anymore.
generally it's best to control your fleet oos and thus, who cares what design a ship has? all you see on a sector map is a ship class icon.

though i'm skeptical too. this seems to be overloaded with so much new and overly complicated stuff. or stuff that nobody asked for or wanted.
imo, less is more. this is why rebirth or x4 don't appeal to a lot of people because they focus too much on tedious crap like walking around on empty stations to look for npc's because "immersion".

looking at screenshots of the steam page i see that we get a bunch of new factions in this addon. those better be all new races which inhabit newly discovered sectors in the universe and not sub groups of existing factions. like the many different corporations like the jonferco, nnmc, atreus, strong arms, terracorp, otas, etc.

on one screenshot i did see that the player can hack stations and provoke wars and stuff. i'm not sure what the point of this is supposed to be? maybe to show your patriotism for a certain race in the universe while stomping out the rest? still certain equipment and ships as well as stations are locked to certain shipyards or equipment docks, owned by specific races in the universe.

the complex construction planner seems nice, but it's nothing we didn't have access to before using external tools.

the expansion will be free, so i'm glad they're at least trying to release something new on this old game engine, i maybe would've paid a few bucks for it too, but it should benefit the mod team and not just egosoft for publishing this.

That is not stretching, there is literally a completely new, custom mid-section for it or a repeat of the modular section. Similar to what the game has in terms of Hauler and XL variants. That's how it looks properly.

Then by your logic, the game doesn't even need to be 3D.

sure. if you like old arcady gameplay like asteroids when it comes to space shooters.

all i'm saying is, that for micromanaging of my fleet, i don't need "oh fancy" graphics. veterans avoid being present at sectors that have high traffic of their own ships. why watch 3 mins of a docking sequence, when it's instant when the player is elsewhere?

so ship design is the least of my issues. by that argument you could say the mistral looks crap, which it does btw. it's some golden glowing ship with huge wings on.
would i skip the ship because of it? hell no, i wouldn't. it's still the best ts ships available in x3tc. so why would i cherry pick my ships based on design?

also you seem to forget that every faction has their own unique ship designs. they need to stand out from each other or this game would become even more of a spreadsheet game. when every ship would look the same and only uses a different name that's linked to different stats.
I wish they added normandy and star wars ships and game soundtrack was despacito.

I think the triple-hulled Boron one is fine (pending rear view), as it pretty much is just the logical conclusion for a 'Dolphin Hyperfreighter'. However, the Centaur's 1930 car mudguards are such a defining feature that it looks really bad when duplicated and stretched on a ship that isn't built around that shape and probably also has no direct lore connection to the design of the Centaur anyway.

Edit: Well what do you know, now the game's out and we can read the descriptions, the Consus is actually based on the Centaur chassis in lore. The ship looks a bit better when you see it in the game.

Why didn't they make it look like a proto-Rahanas? The Phantom did a much better job of conveying such a transitional design; if they're going to kitbash models, they should've added cargo sections to that instead.

Feel free to create something yourself if you feel you can do better. It's a free release so what the heck so you expect? 🙄

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
