Metro Exodus also does not use Path Tracing for it's raytracing. This game does. Path Tracing is significantly harder to run on our computers compared to any other type of raytracing. This is currently the single most demanding raytracing game that exists at the moment. Consider this the Crysis of the raytracing era of computer graphics.
I recently bought a 32" 4K 240Hz OLED, and lets just say my puny 4080 Super isn't enough. Guess i'll have to get in the queue for a 5090.
That's surprising, but I guess when resolution increases the computational intensity increases quadratic.
But still, this RTX remix is truely so hard to run.
But man, I'm confused, You mean this is harder to run than CyberPunk path tracing?
In CyberPunk when you enable raytracing it is not raytracing the entire scene. They are only using the raytracing say for reflections on shiny surfaces, or windows, or light reflecting on the street, or some other effect. In Cyberpunk the entire scene is not raytraced regardless of whatever setting you choose in the in-game menu. Only some parts of it are raytraced. This is basically the same thing for all games that have an option in their menu to toggle raytracing on or off.
In Portal with RTX it is different in that the entire scene and every part of the scene is raytraced. Raytracing can not be disabled or switched off in this game. It's required to run the game. In this situation the load on our video cards of running this game is significantly more difficult for the video card to render because instead of calculating light bounces in raytracing only part of the scene the video card has to do it for the entire scene.
Also in Portal with RTX it's not a "native game" either: It's using a Vulkan wrapper to wrap an old DirectX-9 (single-threaded) game into Vulkan. It has the overhead of not only trying to render the raytracing but also render the old game into the new technology at the same time. This leads to some significant CPU utilization too. I have a Ryzen 5800X (overclocked to run at 5050 Mhz) and I usually see 60% - 75% utilization on all 16 threads when playing this game. If you have a weaker CPU say 6 cores/12 threads that's a bit older that could factor into the performance too.
