UI and Text Very Very Small in 4K
Hi there, has anyone had issues with this game's UI and text being so small in 4k that it is pretty much illegible unless you push your face very close to the monitor? I am using a 65" television at 4K for this PC and while I am sitting about 8 feet away from it in my living room, I have windows scaling options set to 250 to make a lot of text more legible. I've messed with scaling and text size options but nothing seems to effect Portal RTX. Most other games I've tried on this rig don't have this problem. I ran into it with Crusader Kings III but there was a mod in workshop that helped enlarge the text in game.

I found an older discussion on the Steam forum for the original Portal that had some suggestions for altering some of the program files in the app folders. I messed around with that for a while and couldn't seem to get it to change anything in game. Would love any suggestions to get this working well in 4K. I could switch to 1080p in game, but I'd rather play at 4K if possible unless the UI prompts being so small will make it a pain.

Thanks for any help with this. I couldn't find a specific discussion about it, so hopefully it will be helpful for others as well.

looks more like upscaled to 8k or so... but you won't need any of it ingame anyway. i assume you played the original. if it works, just keep it.

Yes, but I haven’t played since it first released, I don’t remember how much UI text was displayed during gameplay. You are probably right, maybe just start playing and ignore it. I guess I could get the settings dialed in at 1080 where i can see them and then switch to 4k to play game.

Thank you for your input!

np, why don't you just go with 1440p? but tbh, 1080p is fine for this game already.

if you don't need subtitles, there is basically nothing where you have onscreen text. have fun.

Oh …. I’m just being a dork trying to max everything out because I just bought a new pc that could handle it. Lol. Thanks again.

haha, understandable, and with that size tv even more.

but if you don't have a 4080/4090 you will have a hard time getting playable fps in 4k afaik.

anyway, have fun.

The UI normally doesn't scale up at high resolutions,
unless you use the new user interface created for the Steam Deck,
but it is not compatible with the RTX version of the game (visual bugs).

The original game can be run with the launch option:
-gamepadui

The UI is better, but it has some... interesting consequences. Maybe it's because of my setup (primary 4k monitor and secondary HD monitor), but the game intro launches on my secondary monitor, then goes into an 1920x1080-frameless window on my primary monitor. In the menue, the game is convinced that it's running on 1920x1080 fullscreen and does not let me change anyting about it's visual properties.
It's not unusual for some games to have their internal UI inside of their game unable to scale to a higher resolution. Part of this is why personally I'm staying to game on 1080p and avoiding 1440p or 4K.

Unfortunately, it seems that using the launch option disables the RTX remix.

yeah, pretty much what the following quote mentions... :conwayshrug:

fyi, RTX Remix is used for older games, this uses regular RTX.
