Barely runs on my 3050 laptop unless I drop to DLSS performance or ultra performance, with the settings menu screaming at me that I don't have enough VRAM.

it literally says it in the name of this version "RTX". how do you plan to play it on unsupported hardware?

besides that, you really need to upgrade or you won't be playing much soon.

If you have anything below RTX 3060 GPUs of course it will run bad or in case of GTX, not at all. What do you think RTX stands for in the title and for which GPUs it was developed? And what do you think GTX GPUs lack to run any RTX game? It's pretty self explanatory. GTX 1060 lacks the ray-tracing cores to run a full ray-traced game. some GTX GPUs did receive limited support later on around the release of the RTX 20s series but it is not even close to RTX GPUs. 20s series are now too weak for the game requirements. RTX 3050 is a 20s series in disguise and one of the worst RTX GPUs on the market. There's a reason why RTX 3060s are set as the minimum requirement for Portal RTX.

the 20xx was never the minimum, that was always a 3060. but it does work and run in playable fps on a 2070, if you know what to do. obviously not comparable to later gen gpu. but yeah, like we said, it's literally in the name. :conwayshrug:

fascinating how some people make it through life, right!?

That's your problem. The GTX series of video cards do not support ray tracing. You must upgrade to a newer laptop with a newer video card to be able to play this correctly.

ik, so what laptops can run this smoothly?

There is no direct answer as "It depends" a lot on different specs. I would say to do well in this game you should look for a laptop with at minimum an RTX 4070 Mobile, but try to aim towards an RTX 4080 Mobile. And pay attention to the resolution of the screen/panel in the laptop as that makes a big difference. AVOID a 4K panel, maybe consider a 1440p panel and a 1080p panel would probably be your best option for good performance in this game.

You can always play at 1080p on a 4K panel and use integer scaling for perfectly sharp pixels as would be on a 1080p panel. But yeah, 4K panels in general are not great for laptop use in general.

I own a 4K HDTV in the main room and 1080p content looks awful on it compared to native 4K content. It doesn't matter what "Trickery" you try to do. Native image is always going to be superior. And trying to run this game at 4K on even today's fastest mobile GPU's would be a big mistake.

Besides all that the pixel density would be awful and make text teeny tiny (even with scaling.. not everything scales correctly). IMHO a 4K panel on any laptop is a huge mistake. 4K only makes sense with a 48" or bigger screen.

Anyway: The best performance for this game with any mobile part would always be one of the faster mobile GPU's and a 1080p native screen.
