How come people not realize that this is a tech demo and not an "RT update".
The amount of people complaining about the "low performance" is laughable, guys! this is a tech demo, it's demanding and it's supposed to melt your PC by design, Nvidia is releasing this ONLY to showcase how powerful their 40 series cards at ray tracing when compared to the competition.

It's meant to advertise RTX Remix and modding, not just the new GPUs.

Basically a DLSS 3 showcase, exclusive to 40 series.
Fun fact, you see the "DLSS 3" text in the options, but works as a "DLSS 2" on 20 and 30 series.

Silky-smooth 30 fps for the plebs.
Frames-generator overpowah 90+ fps in 4K for the patricians.

Performance isn't even that bad for what is happening. Barely worse than Minecraft RTX on high settings. If I turn down the settings from ultra to high and performance mode I get about 40 FPS on a 3060 which should be about what a RTX 2070 Super gets as well. Even a 2060 Super should be able to hit 30 FPS. You don't actually need a 4080 to run the game.

Correct. The fact you can't turn off rtx is a clear indication of that. I just want the new textures

Someone can port them to Portal easy

Yes this is demanding, I wouldn't call it a tech demo, minimal errors and steady framerate, but I guess my computer is in the like .5% that can run this right, I kinda wish they had settings to turn the raytracing off and just leave the updated textures. But for what it is I wouldn't call it a tech demo.

Both remix, DLSS and RT are imrpessive here. It's still a very heavy thing for an 'average' card. People don't realize how very taxing RT technology still is, and you can't even bruteforce it as easily as with some issues in the past.

It's crazy to see people with 1650s and other junk go bananas, badmouth the (free!) game, the company, the technology, give negative reviews etc. Just crazy.
RT went from a wet dream couple of generations ago to something within our reach, it will only get better and better as technology is improved and people upgrade their cards to models designed with RT in mind.

So as a tech demo it failed. It runs at about 1/10 of the speed of the original 15yo game without looking that great. It is barely able to render plain, low detail, flat wall environments with short line of sight. Now, I'd like to see something besides plain rooms rendered with full RT, like even just Skyrim, with all the foliage and detail. I wonder if it would get even 10fps on a 4090. RT may be a great tech but it's not ready and way ahead of its time. It won't be viable for years to come and the 4000 pricing is a joke. For the record, I have RTX3080 and I'm able to run it at 60fps but overall RT is a disappointment, the RT performance cost is too great.

Why do people keep mentioning it's a 15yo game? How does that matter? RT is mostly completely unrelated to how old the game is in terms of the performance overhead that is required.

You can kill a good card with Minecraft with RT or Quake II with RT. Do you even understand what this technology is about and what it does?
How does low resolution of OG textures, simplistic/lacking AI, simple models, meshes, lower quality audio etc. affect anything here?

Using old games is helpful to not completely melt machines that try to run pathtraced titles and trim requirements around the edges. Most titles so far used very limited, light version of RT technology. If you want to go all the way then starting with more visually constrained is the only realistic way to go.

Because it's a primitive and simplistic environment to render, low bar for a demo, no modern games look like that. You can't render a more complex game entirely in RT yet. No hardware exists that can run it.
