Portal RTX Crashing on startup
My game keeps crashing on startup. Yes I own Portal 1 and have updated my drivers. I have a 3060 Ti. I have tried reinstalling both Portal 1, Portal With rtx, and my graphics drivers and all it does is go from stop to play on steam. Please help.

Edit: I don’t have mail afterburner running on my computer

Edit: I don’t know why but I was able to launch the game when I ran steam in big picture mode not sure why it worked but I thought what the heck I’ll try it and it worked

I tried forcing 1080 resolution with the parameters mentioned above, and actually made it to the main menu, but it seemed to be running at something like .2 fps, and the interface was simply not usable. Also running a 3060ti. This isn't a problem with our machines, the app is broken. Hope they fix it soon.

I got the program running by manually setting my screen's resolution down to 1920x1080 before starting the program. I think at any higher start resolution (I'm normally set to 3840x2160) I ran out of video memory, and that's causing the crash.

Hope this helps.

I had ran the game and it ran the first time but then wouldn't open after that. I clicked on the gear icon for the game in steam and selected "manage" and then "browse local files" I saw a file names rtx.conf and tied renaming that with an extension rtx.conf.old then relaunched the game and it started up fine with no errors. when I closed the game it had recreated the rtx.conf. So in my case the problem was something in that configuration file...

Hope this helps others.

I'm having the same issue.

Config :
RTX 3600 Ti GPU
AMD 5950X CPU
Asus Prime X570 Pro motherboard
64GB RAM DDR4-3600
Triple monitors(2 of them 4K, one HD)
8 x 1TB SATA SSDs on SAS controller
1 x 2TB NVMe SSD
All PCI-E slots in use
ECHO Audiofire 8a Firewire audio interface

No overclocking.

I'm not huge into gaming, but all the ones I have work fine.
I wanted to try an RTX game and this was a fail.

Thanks for this - I notice the same behaviour with the config file being renewed, but only difference is that mine still crashes upon launch :(

I have a UHD monitor so this could be the reason, but strangely I had no issues running the game on launch day, only when I have come back to continue my game today.

GPU: RTX 3060Ti
CPU: i5 12600k
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3600mhz

May have just solved the crash for me. DLSS 3.0 was shut off for some reason and so I was quickly running out of video memory. My fix:

Hit Alt-X while the Valve splash screen is launching and before you get to the game main menu. Quickly switch DLSS 3.0 to 'ON'. This was enough to prevent the instant crash. Then I ran through the below linked screen shot (provided by Nvidia) for optimal RTX settings and configured the rest. Hope this helps others

3080ti, 5800x

Crashes when changing any options, including the resolution. I'm stuck with the centered 1080p image on my 4k TV

found a fix for me, the game basically tried to launch at 4k (my display is 4k but i have 3070) without dlss2. What i did is use launch settings to start the game at 1440p (on steam library right click on portal, properties, on launch settings type -w 2560 -h 1440 (or the resolution you want), then when you launch the game and the steam logo appears press alt + x, go to developer settings and turn on dlss

you can also use the -w 1920 -h 1080 to force 1080p or -w 1280 -h 720 for 720p in the command box cause you might have some luck that way too.

once in game change the settings with alt+x and i would recomend starting with high settings and DLSS enabled cause it chonks.

That solved the issue for me.

Hi all I had same issue....

not long after i tried red dead 2 but social club wouldn't work due to missing file (visual basic files missing.. how odd i thought, but it was installed but out of date. so i obtained latest from https://download.visualstudio.microsoft.com/download/pr/bcb0cef1-f8cb-4311-8a5c-650a5b694eab/2257B3FBE3C7559DE8B31170155A433FAF5B83829E67C589D5674FF086B868B9/VC_redist.x64.exe)

i got thinking i wonder if that fixes portal rtx, double clicked it and it loaded in straight away!

hope it helps :trainbowbarf:

Fix for me was to disable the steam overlay via right clicking on Portal in library -> properties -> General -> uncheck "enable the steam overlay"

Depending if your system can run it, download and install the latest runtime from https://vulkan.lunarg.com/sdk/home

I managed to get the game work by going into Steam Big Picture mode first, then launch the game though there, I don't know how it even make sense or work but it do?

I cant get it working no matter what settings I change.. tried visual C++ distributable, tried dropping the resolution to 1080P and below, tried big picture mode, tried all of the above and I'm getting nothing.. cant even get the debug to output to a file.. all I get is I hit play, it looks like it's doing something for a split second and then it fails out almost immediately, nothing shows on screen, just steam showing I'm playing portal for a second .. pls halp
