You can certainly do 2 players or solo but it's a flex.
Pretty sure you can still play solo coop missions by clicking the "eye" icon next to the buddy bot so you can start the coop mission immediately without matching other players but idk if you can complete the missions on higher difficulty solo.
In that case it might actually be easier solo than 2man.
Although, I'm a little curious about why you'd want to be paired with just one random for 2man, if you'll play with strangers then is there really a difference beyween them being one or two?
Seems like the coop missions were built for 3 players in this game, it's up to you if you want to tackle them yourself as a challenge or with other players with ease.
If the coop missions were built like how SC2 coop missions are, then it doesn't adapt to the number of players in terms of enemies and just like in SC2, you'll need to handle all the same number of enemies regardless if you're solo or with someone else. That's the point of "coop" after all. You can always just adjust the difficulty if you're playing solo.
This would be one thing if the armies and commanders actually worked well together or if fighting as a team was in any way rewarded, but more often than not you're completely stuck behind another player or your units are being stuck in some unholy blob of nonsense where your hero can't do ♥♥♥♥ anymore and caster units might as well not exist with their inability to actually reach targets.
And it keeps getting worse for no understandable reason. In 1v1 celestials have an upgrade for their cores to make them move faster, great! In co-op you get upgraded cores that provide absolutely minuscule healing and energy regeneration with a bonus of not being able to keep up with your army because they don't have the move speed upgrade... it feels like it was just slapped together in an afternoon with no thought or care whatsoever. I just cannot for the life of me understand why factions are WORSE in co-op than they are in 1v1.
I've had it happen to me twice, More people know about it faster dev has to patch it.
Is it a good solution? No
But, I'd rather be teamkilled / Forced outta game than have to play with another leaver. Least this gives me an excuse to leave if they're gunna be awful humans.
I'm with you on this one. The onboarding in this game is so bad you'd almost thing they deliberately designed it out of spite. Co-op teaches you practically nothing valuable for PvP nor does it feel designed around it.
The most obvious thing they could have done is allow for casual matchmaking in the form of 3v3 or 2v2 - which were always excellent modes for people to learn the ropes in SC. It allows you to reflect on not just yourself, but also your allies. Nobody took these modes too seriously. Instead we just have 1v1 - which invites sealclubbing of new players.
And honestly - the PvP in this game is good fun. It really is - but it just tries so damn hard to make it miserable to get into.
