Using StarCraft as an example, in multiplayer I almost exclusively play Zerg. So the only skins I've bought in SC2 are the Zerg skins. But if I could set (or had to set) my opponent's skins, it would have tripled the amount of skins I bought.
I'd be fine with the pets being based on what the other player selects though, but everyone has their own threshold for what they find annoying. To me, it's not any different than SC2 maps that have little animals running around, which I actually enjoy!
I've gathered I'm in the minority as I've discussed this with more people, and I assume I won't get my wish of being able to set skins for myself and my opponent, but it doesn't change the fact that it would cause me to spend a lot more money on the game.
It would allow for WAY more interesting and creative skins than what we got in SC2. I remember some fanart of zerg as sushi. That would be doable in this system.
