So lets look at the reverse. How many RTS games have less players than Stormgate?
The answer is a LOT more. You're post would be so long it would take up the first 2 pages of the thread lol.
These are finished games out for years with expansions.
SG is probably about 30% done and no custom games.
It should have gotten a lot more players for the hype and advertising as the 'future of RTS' and a SC2 successor. But they have not released enough content yet so they're at where they're at.
What you fail to address here at all is scale. Stormgate is in horrible shape for the resources put into it. Let's put it into perspective: The overhead costs for example of a mom-and-pop diner versus a major chain restaurant are entirely different. And both can certainly be good to eat at. However, to say "well I bet that mom-and-pop diner wishes they had the same amount of customers as restaurant chain X!" is just absurd if restaurant chain X is deeply struggling in revenue versus its expenditures.
The customer acquisition cost matters, and Stormgate has zero bragging rights for the time and work and capital put into it. All you have are "things will get way better" fluff pieces by the developer that should never ever be taken at face value. And, for four years of work, the lack of good execution shows how far behind the curve they truly are. They will have to pull a miracle off at this point to get where they need to be because we're not even "diamond in the rough" status. And not only must they be burning through crucial cash at this point, but the player count is declining rapidly. The game doesn't have much of a prayer.
A game not selling well doesn't mean it's not a good game. McDonald's has sold millions of burgers, but McDonald's burgers are not the best burgers you will ever taste. Financial success doesn't equal quality.
To me, Supreme Commander absolutely is one of the best RTS games ever made. There's nothing that has surpassed it. The issue with that game is that it was ahead of its time. If that game came out today, it would be a monster hit among RTS gamers.
I am not saying this will ever get off the ground when it releases. It may fail miserably with a handful of active users. Yet this post is not making any point to development feedback.
OK, Beyond All Reason is still lacking so much polish they won't put a page on steam yet. It doesn't have a campaign or settled lore. It has more players than Stormgate, 1262 right now.
This is true, but posts like this are people giving up on the game rather than trying to talk to the devs. If you want to see more positivity, it's probably on the Discord.
I'm SUPER excited for Hades 2, but I'm not buying it until the full version releases.
Fast forward to early early access for paid version. Not looking good. Free version launches. I play that. I watch the first campaign cutscene and I stare in disbelief at how bad it is. I think at all times there was an indicator "Hold X to skip" or something similar. Can't remember for sure if it was there. I didn't want to start the campaign as it's not finished.
Hopped into a skirmish match with JUST ME AND AN AI. The names of the difficulty levels were confusing. Think I picked the middle one. Started up as zerg and played against terran (can't remember the name of the factions they picked, infernals and vanguard?). The AI played very badly, especially considering it was my first ever game and on medium difficulty. Pathfinding not working properly, very boring looking map made of just grass and trees. Basic functionality like selecting some units then shift+control group to select the group as well was missing. Experienced a lag spike in a SINGLEPLAYER MATCH. I had to go afk for a bit mid game and realised you can't pause in a SINGLEPLAYER MATCH. Went afk for a bit, came back and the AI still didn't finish me off.
Alt F4. Uninstall.
I don't know who Stormgate is made for. Clearly not for Starcraft 2 fans or RTS games fans in general. I am clearly not the target audience. Good luck to them with whoever is their target audience. Small target audience. Not many people seem to enjoy it judging by the player numbers.
They simply can't catch the magic those games had.
Look again at those games OP did mention,
they are not like the one from Blizzard, so they stand out.
