EDIT:
Ok, I watched some videos on YT, from the first 3 campaign missions. It's not that bad. This is not a "student project", but the quality bar is WAY below SC2.
They're attempting to do a full campaign, the co-op commanders mode, a competitive 1v1 mode, and a Starcraft 2-style map editor / custom game builder all in one. All of these modes are only partially complete, leading most people to feel the game doesn't have enough content or polish, because most players predominantly care about only one of them. It might have been a better option to just focus on one or two of the things and really polish that up instead.
There are no special features or elements in this game that set it apart from other RTS games, and it's hard to believe that the former Blizzard employees who worked on SC2 have managed to make a game of this caliber in 4 years.
People who rate this game highly understand that it's unfinished because it's in early access, but they seem to forget that it's the product of over $40 million dollars invested over 4 years.
The first is the design of the races. They all have some interesting quirks. Celestials are very unique in terms of how they work, Infernals have their unit splitting mechanic, and even the Vanguard have their unique supply buildings. The design of the races generally feels pretty cool.
The second is the co-op commanders mode, which only this game and SC2 have. This is, IMO, kind of a revolutionary feature for RTS games and any game that has it is instantly notable. I'm actually shocked more games haven't copied it.
In terms of the campaign, it absolutely doesn't stand out at all, which is an issue for sure. Compared to SC2 there's way less here, that game had a number of unique mechanics to its campaign which aren't carried over.
