In Coop you have a bunch of so called 'Heroes', or Coop Commanders, who are basically special sub factions which have many unique upgrades and units and who are stronger than the regular factions. Each mission is a 3vE, so you choose one Commander and then th ematchmaking matches you with 2 other players as you play a special mission, which is much more ismilar to a campaign mission rather than a versus match.
After each mission your Commander gains EXP and unlocks new upgrades/abilities/units as they level up. Past lvl 10 you even unlock some kind of 'equipment' or however you want to call it, basically a bunch of very special upgrades and you must choose which ones you want before each mission (or at least in SC2 it was before the mission).
And usually you play on a random map, currently there are 5 maps, and each map has a different objective. And you also always fight a random enemy AI, who regularly sends clearly marked attack waves at you and your two allies, quite similar to campaign missions. And the AI also starts with pre buitl bases and won't usually rebuild them or build new bases.
Monetization wise you get one Commander for free (Blockase, a Vanguard 'Hero') and all others can also be played for free but with a level cap of 5, and buying them removes the level cap. And each Commander is priced with 10$ each.
TLDR: Coop is simply THE open ended PvE content Stormgate has to offer.
But you don't all need to own the campaign content you want to play that when it's ready, just one of the people in the group.
