It's not. You can completely finish the game and do most of what you want without paying a dime. That said, paying makes things a lot easier and/or more flexible for you. A lot of people I know in-game play without paying.

As some basics, a F2P account:
  • Can join guilds, but not create them.
  • Can receive mail, but not send it.
  • Can buy from the broker (the player market), but not sell on it.
  • Cannot make use of Master level spell books.
  • Cannot use mercenaries (but they can be obtained with a one-time payment).
  • Does not get live customer support (but from what I hear, that's rare for paying customers too).
  • Cannot choose "premium" races or classes (again, these can be obtained with a one-time payment).

Paying customers also get more character slots (a F2P account gets 4, but can add more at $10 USD each slot).

But you're able to use things that used to be locked to Gold members, Like you can use fable, legendary, you have no currency cap in bank or on your character, and almost all expansion packs are given for free.

Couple things not right here.
FTP players (im silver for what its worth,or was? I dunno anymore) Can use expert level spell tomes.Only the master tomes cant be used..but even there is a cash shop unlock.

And just for clarity the feature pack(mercanaries, class, crafter helper, dungeon maker ect) isnt free for gold players either.Expect to lay out 100-150 buck's to unlock everything .

I fixed the spell book thing -- I wasn't sure as it's been a while. Apologies for getting it wrong, nonetheless.

But note, Silver is no longer an available membership level. If you already have it, you get to keep it but it can no longer be purchased.

What on earth are you talking about... I've been on and off playing and even more rarely do I end up taking hte time to buy a krono via trades. What you listed comes from getting an expansion.

An expansion that will prolly end up being free in november when the next one comes out.

Also since no one has mentioned it, Kronos can be bought on the broker with plat. They are a one month membership item that other people spent 15$ on in order to make a decent amount of plat. Expect to pay 2k-3k Plat on them.

Plus if you unlock a crap ton of master level spells when you are gold for a month you keep it when you go silver...This works even during the rare events where they give everyone a free week of sub time.

Aside from special occasions, everything I have seen points to either grind forever to get money to buy time from someone else, or spend your own money to be able to use best stuff. So yes, it is Pay to Win at higher levels, but not in the sense of buying the best stuff, you just have to pay to be able to use the best stuff that dropped for you or even stuff you crafted. Most of the game can easily be done without it though.
