I joined a guild and after that it was easy mode, lots of help, quick travel, guild members helping me with gear.
I am on the fence to come back but am so bored of everything else.
Pretty sure I was a level 100 Shadow Knight.
What server is the most populated ? i can start the darklight quest over on another server, and create another necro, and it won't take long to get to 20's,and at least I will be on a server with players.
as others have said, Varsoon is a great option for newbs seeking to try the game and do some group play, but I can also recommend our Kael server, if that's your type of gameplay.

If you check out the newest video I made, at around 33:30 you can see ppl randomly meeting in Sinking Sands around the campfire doing some of the new content that just got released a few weeks ago. Was recording in the middle of the night too, so time / timezone is also a deciding factor ofc. I also have another video getting prepped for upload, which will show a lot more ppl playing the new highend content in higher levels, bc lower level zones tend to be a bit more empty on live without a guild. So to answer your question, nope, far from dead, but after 20 years worth of content, ppl on live are either inside their homes and guild halls or playing the new and shiny stuff that just got released. It's totally different for Varsoon and Kael though, as the others have already mentioned.
Seems like lots of ppl are coming back or giving this world a try for the first time, so if you want to continue to play on the live servers, I recommend reaching out to some of our vets in the community, which are actively offering their help for you new guys. See here for more info:

You can also find yourself a nice guild by asking in chat or using the guild finder tool in game, which simplifies the approach and helps newbies get in touch with well established guilds. Oh and before I forget, yes, the economy on live is going to be a bit more difficult than say on Varsoon or Kael, but that's also normal after all these years. Longtime players are discussing this very subject in our forums, brainstorming the idea and trying to find ways to reduce the inflation (broker) and make it more newbie-friendly without making our existing vet playerbase angry.
