Depends what you want?

The two MMOs are so different.

personally i think EQ2 is the better game, but you really don't have to choose. play them both. i still play EQ from time to time because of attachments to old characters.

You can play them both since they are both free and if you get all access, it means you have all access to eq2 and eq1 + some other game probably DC Universe or Planetside 2. How cool is that that you can play with benefits all 3 games.

But let me tell you a thing, if your time is short and you only have a few hours a day, but you want to play fo months, you can get far in all of these games combined.

EQ1 takes months to get to max level, but the game has been made easier with mercenaries.

Speaking of merc's in EQ2, they should be avoided until you are high level and doing harder content because they are so powerfull that the lay waste to mob encounters pretty fast.

If you played WoW and liked it you will fit right into EQ2. You can also try Rift if you liked WoW.

My opinion is you should try and play EQ2 first and see if you like it. It features an auction house/broker system lot's of nodes to harvest and craft items.

Don't expect to get into groups alot unless you start a heroic character in either of the two. The low levels are a barren wasteland.

Why not revisit both of them? For EQ1 I suggest checking out which time-lock progression server has freshly started so you can experence the game from vanilla up to wherever you may want to stop. I am biased toward EQ1 since I played that the longest. I played a raiding Shadowknight for a few years and then sort of dropped out of the game around the Depths of Darkhollow expansion. About 3 years ago I got into a time-lock progression server as a Warrior and tanked for some raids and experienced trade skiling (not my fav whatsoever). It was GREAT with the guild I joined and eventually had to quit as Planes of Power opened up for personal reasons. As I am writing this I am waiting to create my first EQ2 character and see how I like it :D

I tired to get back in old EQ, but the user interface were horrible and couldnt handle those wonky graphics. So EQ2 look okay to me.

EQ2

EQ2 is the easiest one to understand. The first one is an archaic and more hardcore game which most wont bother about these days. EQ2 is easier but you definately have all those 6-7 hotbars full of spells and skills at high level in EQ2 (no joking here). Mind you in EQ2 there is also some hard content but I think EQ1 seems to be the more fustrating of the two to play.

Both games have a mercenary system like in Diablo 2 and 3.

As a system EQ 2 is good and interesting.
But when I started the EQ1 was very fresh and impressive.
