The two MMOs are so different.
But let me tell you a thing, if your time is short and you only have a few hours a day, but you want to play fo months, you can get far in all of these games combined.
EQ1 takes months to get to max level, but the game has been made easier with mercenaries.
Speaking of merc's in EQ2, they should be avoided until you are high level and doing harder content because they are so powerfull that the lay waste to mob encounters pretty fast.
If you played WoW and liked it you will fit right into EQ2. You can also try Rift if you liked WoW.
My opinion is you should try and play EQ2 first and see if you like it. It features an auction house/broker system lot's of nodes to harvest and craft items.
Don't expect to get into groups alot unless you start a heroic character in either of the two. The low levels are a barren wasteland.
Both games have a mercenary system like in Diablo 2 and 3.
But when I started the EQ1 was very fresh and impressive.
Fond memories of flopping arounbd everquest online advemntures on sony ps w/ 40$ modem attachment becuase my pc couldnt run EQ.
Then bought EQ2 and PC couldnt run it... moved onto wow....
Now i want eq or eq 2 before vanilal wow, cant decide. thnx folks!
