You can bind cyclic to mouse so it is possible, but I would say it is a very sub-optimal way to play as the game definitely isn't optimised for mouse and keyboard. This game isn't like War Thunder - it is firmly on the simulation side of sim-lite in terms of flight models.
Having said that I think there are a few people who do play with the mouse and keyboard but I don't know how successful they are.
I could add a proper mouse & keyboard control system - something along the Freelancer style or, at the very least, some kind of display so you can see what you virtual joystick input is doing.
Any other takers for a mouse and keyboard control scheme?
I think the main thing is not having a visual cue on where you virtual joystick is. I'll add that in as soon as I can
If I'm going to do mouse control then I might as well do it properly
Darker by Psygnosis? I know it well. Played a demo for ages but never ever had the full game.
Never really understood what I had to do but I loved the ambiance of flying round the city at night. It's also a game I very much want to add to my "Big Box" collection.
However I would like to register my "vote" for a full mouse and keyboard control scheme if possible.
Sigh - just recalling happy memories of Gunship 2000 back in the day.... Meanwhile, thank you for developing this - really looking forward to trying out DEX!
Mouse control is incoming over the weekend.
You are losing half the dexterity by using thrust keys on a keyboard or flying and flying with a mouse. About the only thing I use a mouse for in sims is menu navigation or manipultating MFD buttons with the built in mouse stick on the Saitek X56, not for flight!
People using a HOTAS will fly circles around you. Its just so bad and inferior in so many ways to be flying like that.
You can buy a nice entry level Thrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner HOTAs for like 25-30.00 (got one almost new on ebay years ago) if your on a budget so there is no excuse not too. I started out on one of those until I moved up to an X52 pro and then an X56. Please, for the fullest experience and far better control. Buy one and fly RIGHT.
Turn on alt hold, tweak the stability settings and reduce enemy damage and you've got yourself an arcade shooter and if that's how you want to play the game then that's perfectly cool with me
I was thinking of using mouse and a throttle controller when the time comes (Thrustmaster with a plethora of buttons). Would that be viable?
I have 3 damaged fingers on my right hand which now make my T16000 joystick unusable. If it never gets better, joysticks will unfortunately be off the table for me, so will be happy to work with what i have got.
Cheers :)
Yes, you can mix and match controllers. So mouse control for cyclic and throttle control for collective is fine. The only thing you'll need is some sort of tail rotor/rudder control for when you're at low speed but digital buttons on the throttle control can be used for this too.
I was also thinking of having a "MIX" option available that would allow the cyclic to mix in tail rotor control at low speed.
I think the the throttle may have a small analogue controller on it that may fit the bill for low speed rudder.... will have a rootle about!
This will be the next stage of mouse flight control. Basically it is an autopilot function to maintain bank and pitch angle based on mouse position.
This way the helicopter will sort of fly where you're pointing a bit like "Freelancer's" mouse control.
I'm kind of the same - HOTAS take up a lot of room, which is of course why I did the Joypad system.
However, I do find mouse and keyboard a suitable control system as well now. I might have a go at implementing the bank/pitch hold system tomorrow.
This system will also work for Joypads and HOTAS setups as it will act like a stability system.
