Does this game take place before or after Sonic 3?
So is Sonic CD Sonic 2.5, or more like Sonic 3.5?

Dude. If Sonic CD had took place after Sonic 2, where did Tails GO?

There are problems for having Sonic CD taking place after Sonic 2.

1. Sonic still has the emeralds after the end of Sonic 2.

2. Sonic 2 directly leads to Sonic 3.

3. Tails is absent. What I mean by asbent is that he's not in the story of Sonic CD. Atleast he's unlockable only as a bonus character in Taxman 2011 version.

Logically Sonic wouldn't be running off taking a break knowing that robotnik's out there not even with the Death Egg destroyed that's crashed into Angel Island...Robotnik couldn't be at Little Planet and Angel Island at the same time. If CD took place after Sonic 2.

There would be two plotholes. I would say it might take place after Sonic 1 and before Sonic 2.

It takes place after Sonic 3. It's been officially stated by Sega that it was the "prequel" to Sonic 4 Episode II. So, it takes place between Sonic 4 Episode I and Episode II.

Also, Tails and Sonic split up all the time. It's not a big deal.

yeah I wouldn't exactly trust the sonic 4 PR team with timeline details, especially considering they tried to make it that sonic and knuckles' story happen parallel in sonic and knuckles when thats just not possible.

They advertised Sonic CD as a game that came before Episode II. That does not mean that CD comes right before Episode II. But seriously, Sonic CD got released before Sonic 3 & Knuckles did. Atleast considering Sonic CD taking place after the Death Egg saga before Sonic 4 saga is less arguable but...

It's either that Sonic CD takes place before the Death Egg Saga ( Which is before Sonic 2 ) or AFTER the Death Egg Saga ( After Sonic 3 & Knuckles ) which I think it's gonna be hard to confirm. I'd still say it likely takes place before the Death Egg Saga.

There isn't a debate about if you should trust them. That's an official representative of Sega. That makes it canon.

The Sonic brand manager who made that statement also clarified very shortly after on the official forums, posting that it was a prequel to Sonic 4 Ep2 but that they "are not taking away 'when CD happened' in relationship to the numerical versions"

So if we're going by Sega's official representative, well their latest stance is that they aren't clarifying when CD takes place in relationship to the other 16-bit games, just that it takes place before Sonic 4.

Well, Sonic CD & Sonic 2 was being worked on at the same time with different teams in different regions because the Lead Programmer Yuji Naka had grown dissatisfied with the rigid corporate policies at Sega, so he moved to the United States to work with the Sega Technical Institute. Incidentally, a large number of the original design team of Sonic also left for the U.S., to help instruct the American developers.

After Sonic 1, Before Sonic 2.

This, basically Sonic CD is the japanese version of Sonic 2 (well not precise)
But yeah it's the product of 2 different teams working on a sequel to the first game.
