Sega of America felt the Japanese soundtrack was not "extereme" and "dude with a tude" enough to fit their portrayal of Sonic that they stuck with up until 1999.

Well the japanese Soundtrack is extremely cheesy and lame. It was a wise decision. The USA Soundtrack is pretty good and fits the game a lot better i think.

It has both, you can switch in the options. By default it is set to Japanese soundtrack.

I thought it was something like they wanted something exclusive to the US version of the game. Close enough to your reason I guess. And the reason the Past tracks weren't changed is because they were sequenced (like the cartridge titles) unlike the Futures and Present. To change them would mean reprograming the code that plays the Past tunes.

Well I like the option of switching between the two soundtracks. Each has its share of good tracks. Would be awesome if you could select the tracks individually so you could choose your favs from both.

I've heard that Sega had opened a new sound studio at the time, so I guess Sonic CD was the best way to show it off. But the whole "extreme" thing seems likely, too!

Japanese OST wasn't good enough so a superior American version was made.

Honestly they had no reason to change the Japanese soundtrack it is pretty cool! Maybe Sega had issues deciding the soundtrack so America made there own.

Because US Americans heard the PAL/JPN soundtrack and said, "WOAH, Japan what is this sound I can't take it, We're making our own soundtrack, Thank u very much!"

The Japanese soundtrack is pretty bad IMO. I remember playing this game on the PC on windows 95 lol.

Man whats with all the hate for the Japanese soundtrack? At least Quartz Qaudrant sounds like a diamond mine and not a rock concert.
Slash0mega Nov 5, 2013 @ 10:10am
indeed, what is with the hate? nonstalga i guess? anyhow, I can say this, the game over track of the amarican version is the WORST thing ever! I was playing the game for the first time on the gamecube and it was late at night, got a game over and turned the game off...

I'd say the Japanese soundtrack is better overall, however I can't stand the boss theme, the annoying locals totally ruin it. The US soundtrack does have a much better Stardust Speedway though.

I for one perfer the US sound track a bit better, though there are still some of the Japenese songs I feel are good too.
