The traditional Spin-dash (Which you can do by pressing Down and either holding the jump button; or "revving it up" by repeatedly tapping the jump button (like in Sonic 2))
And the other is the Peel-Out (done by holding Up and holding the jump button). You won't curl up into a ball with the Peel Out, but you do sure start running really fast.
The original game's "traditional" down spin dash took time to "rev up" by holding down the jump button. And only had one full speed. It does have a different "feel" than Sonic 2 or other game's spin dashes.
And this version of the game being a completely loyal and amazing rebuild and port made to be exactly the original game includes the same spin dash. As well as the up "peel out". Now where this game really shines is all the extra content they added onto the game! In this remake they also add within the options the ability to use the Sonice 2 style spin dash. Best of both worlds!
So it has exactly what you want!
Edit: Just reinstalled it and launched it. The option is in the main title menu options to change the spin dash to Sonic 2 style. But you CAN'T change it mid game, it doesn't appear in the pause menu. You gotta do it in the title menu.
