I knew of the Chaotix through Sonic Heroes back in the day but knew little of their origins until much later on. But regardless of the actual quality of the game itself (I hear it's pretty mediocre according to most that have played it) it's still disappointing it never saw any form of re-release at all.
The Game Gear games were a nice bonus though - I never had a GameCube back then nor did I have SADX for it that included all those games as a bonus, so it was nice to see all twelve games in playable form on PS2 due to both the Mega Collection Plus and Gems Collection discs. Not to mention the former had Comix Zone and Ristar while the latter included Vectorman 1 and 2 as unlockable bonus games.
We had to way for 2011 to see a proper re-release of Sonic CD (thanks for Whitehead) but they still don't re-release Sonic 3&K (and even less of Sonic 3 alone + Sonic & Knuckles) anymore.
Even the Segasonic the Hedgehog arcade game was planned (if I recall correctly) but they couldn't find a way to effectively emulate the trackball.
There are many Sonic game stuck on their original platform (Pocket Adventure on the NGP, the Advance and Rush trilogies and the Rivals Dualogy).
Finally, I hope they eventually re-release their 8-bits Sonic (and other Sega) games here.
Also I'm thanksful I have the ORI classic controller with the bigger D-pad for that kind of game.
Come to think of it, it's weird how Sonic Team seems to treat PAL gamers a bit better than American gamers considering the Master System marketing, the whole Gems Collection situation and even a PS3 release of Sonic Heroes on the digital store which was also Australian and European exclusive, especially when most other game companies I can think of would do the exact opposite for the PAL market.
As for Chaotix, maybe Whitehead could add some more traditional levels without the hook ring gimmick as the main flaw of the game is that there is little to no enemies so they felt empty most of the time.
Even if you don't enjoy any of the other games in the collection, I would still recommend it for Sonic Mega Collection Plus alone; the only problem is that this collection only came out in the PAL region. I still have this collection as I bought it back when stores over here were selling it, but it's one of the best collections the rest of the world missed out on, especially considering I enjoyed all four games in the collection. However, PC games are region free and you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it online if you have any interest in it.
Hence why co-op in most Sonic games were considered more of an afterthought rather than a core mechanic - it doesn't really work that well for a fast paced game like this and typically works better for games that are much slower paced like Mario and Rayman or use split-screen instead of sharing a single screen. Even in Sonic 2, Tails often gets left behind due to Sonic taking priority and the bosses are a joke if you play with someone who knows how to use Tails very well.
I think Sonic Advance 3 was the best we've ever seen this kind of co-op style gameplay for a Sonic game so far, but even that required every player to have their own system and their own copy of the game.
It should be ported, but as a game its very "ok". So releasing it on its own probably wont happen.
If only...
How about having a remaster with the original included?
Even then I don't think people would buy an old PS2 game specifically for that.
