Question about the time stones.

So I have a question about the 7 time stones. I know when you get all 7 it automatically makes it so when you pass any remaining stages you pass them with a good future set. However if you can set a good future by destroying eggmans pods doesn't that pretty much do the same thing. So does getting all the time stones unlock a special ending or something?

Destroying all the robot teleporters or collecting all the Time Stones both get the good ending.
