Problems getting controller to work for this game
I've just started playing this game and I'm having a lot of fun with it. However when I plug my 360 controller in to my computer and try to play this game it doesn't seem to work at all. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Go to 'Game Options' from the main menu and from there go to 'Controls...' then move down to the 'Controller:' tab and press the right arrow key, this will set it to Gamepad 01 and then it will recognise your gamepad, if not move it one more to the right so that it changes to Gamepad 02.

Not working for me either. I have an xbox360 wired controller. Set up options as described by PixelVortex and no joy. I also downloaded drivers for the controller (just in case the ones Windows uses natively needed updating), and rebooted. No luck. The controller works fine with other games, just isn't being identified by Cave Story. I've Googled to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?
Edit: I've gone in to the Windows Control Panel options for the device and all the buttons, joystick and gamepad controls are working. I'm at my wits end. Running Windows 7 64bit.

my 360(afterglow)controller works well, so idk whats going on, but either you plugged it in DURING the application, forgot to swap it from keyboard to controller in the menu, the wire in the controller is snapped (thats happend to me once), or if you have a ten-pin connector and if its plugged out even a hair, its not going to work untill you plug it in a bit.

hope that works
advice from your hardrive.

Yeah my 360 controller is working well now but that is another thing i just found out. You gotta plug the controller in before you start the game.

I've got the 360 controller plugged in, I've got drivers updated, I've got the controller turned on, and I did so before the game launched. When I get into the game to go switch controls in setup from Keyboard to Gamepad or whatever, the game does not show me any options no matter what buttons I press or how many times to the right or left I press the arrow button. Just shows 'Keyboard'.

Does this happen to anyone? Any suggestions other than the standard turn on controller before game starts / download drivers because those are not working at all for me (and yes, I did download the correct drivers for my Windows7, I wasn't accidentally downloading XP drivers or something like that).

Try plugging it into every USB port on your machine sometimes games have problems detecting what port a controller is plugged into and in certain instances the game can't check certain ports and as a result will believe no controller is plugged in. It used to happen to me in another game then I plugged my controller into one of my back USB ports and it worked fine.

Some time ago I also had problems with Cave Story in regards to the Xbox controller. It wouldn't work with any of the three I tried (I have four controllers in total). A few weeks ago I reformatted my HDD and set up my PC from scratch and tell you what: It works perfectly, now. Thing is: I don't know if the controller I am using now is the fourth one, only that I didn't find it back then. What is your problem exactly, anyway? For me it was the menu scrolling through the options indefinitely which, I assumed, was due to the controllers dead zone not being taken into account. So, is your problem similar to mine?

For me I get no option whatsoever for 'controller' or 'gamepad'... it only offers 'keyboard' and no option to switch to anything else. Unless it has some bizarre button to access it like "hit tab while holding ctrl and J " or something. :/

I'll try sticking it in one of the USBs on the back of the computer on the off chance that helps later as PixelVortex suggests to see if that makes 'gamepad' show up in the input options, but, I don't have much hope.

Well I'm sorry as I can see I'm not of big help here, but the only thing I can't extract from your post is if you have considered a reinstall of the game. I can't really explain it otherwise, sorry.

If the above doesn't work I'll try reinstalling as well, thanks.

Let us know if it worked :)
